A biographical sketch published in Portrait and Biographical Albums of Sanilac County in 1884 says James was born 6 October 1820. The 1820 birth year is consistent with his reported ages in the 1870 U.S. Census, 1880 U.S. Census, 1851 Census of Canada, 1861 Census of Canada and 1884 Michigan State Census. The age of 63 given for James in the Michigan census enumerated in June 1884 is consistent with a birth date in the second half of 1820. No source other than the gravestone has been found for the alleged birth and death years of 1811 and 1881. The gravestone appears modern and is shared with four family members who died between 1901 and 1929. (See research notes in profile) |
