Pierce-11869

In 1769, John Pierce was one of the Forty Yankees who entered the Wyoming Valley of what would become Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, one of the original formed under the authority of Connecticut and the Susquehanna Land company. <ref> http://www.pagenweb.org/~luzerne/patk/ktwp.htm </ref> John's son is buried in the Forty Fort cemetery, in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania. It is assumed that John, Sr. was buried there, as well. Forty Fort Cemetery was mostly destroyed in the June, 1972 floods that accompanied Hurricane Agnes. Over 2,700 graves were destroyed. Of these, 1410 burial vaults, caskets, and remains were recovered. As a result of the geological damage done to the cemetery, replotting to match original layout was impossible. As a result, a park was built over the area and dedicated to the memory of those whose graves were destroyed. The 1410 recovered burials were reinterred individually at Memorial Shrine Cemetery, about six miles away. <ref> https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/597682/forty-fort-cemetery#view-photo=9091743 </ref> John Pierce Sr certain 10 Feb 1704 certain Plainfield, Windham, Connecticut Wyoming, Luzerne, Pennsylvania, United States Male Shoults-17
