They had 4 or 5 children before they emigrated. - John’s home was in Canada, not the USA. - The marriage notice in Canadian newspapers said that Janet Glen was the daughter of Captain Glen of the Royal Navy. In other words Glen was her maiden name, so she was not likely a widow. Assuming Mary's parents and and birth date are correct, she was conceived in Sept 1813 when John was 18 and Elizabeth was 19. John and Elizabeth declared an irregular marriage (ie not sanctioned by the church) when Elizabeth was 5 months pregnant. Four months after the baby was born, the parents were evidently married in both their churches, or at least their marriage was sanctioned in both churches, and then 1.5 months later the baby was baptised.
