__TOC__ :Profile Improvements Project (PIP) Voyage Graduates ::& Their Improved Profiles :These profiles are on the Voyagers' watchlist and are usually profiles for their own family. Each member has used the Voyage to show their skills in: * following the community's style guidelines * using the Wiki markup language * ensuring adequate sources for the information included in the biographies :The goal is constant improvement, not perfection, and each profile reflects the Voyagers' own personal preferences on profiles for which they are the only manager. Voyagers understand that: * improvements may be made by other members * they will need to work together with other interested family members on stylistic decisions :More recent voyage graduates, their profiles, and feedback can be found at PIP Voyagers Improved Profiles 2024. === 2020 Graduates === *Becky Troth **Elizabeth (Brasier) Jarvis **Elizabeth (Cooksey) Brasier *Helen (Thornton) Holt **David Joseph Holthoefer **Howard William Holthoefer *Robin (Dodge) Shaules **James Arthur Dodge **Warren Winkelstein Jr. *Leandra Ford **Jane (Williams) Fradd **Margaret Jane (Fradd) Lomman ***"Undertaking the Voyage helped to improve my citations, increased my knowledge of Wikitree style requirements and I learned about some very useful tools that I now use frequently." *Melissa (Mutimer) Jamison **James William Blackwell **Harriet Mutimer *TC Duran **Abraham Hartzell **Samuel (Hertzel) Hartzell *Susan DeFoe **Percy Albert Brewster Bowen **Waldo Ernst Grover Pfalz *Karen (Finnerty) Butler **Mary Ann (Manison) Cupples **Phyllis Kathleen (Geary) Harvey *Dallas (MacKechnie) Manicom **Thomazine Parsons **John Alves *Stephen Davies **James Edward Hough **Charlotte Winifred (Kibble) Hough *Rob Judd **Mary Ann (Wood) Higgins **Edward Fox *Kylie Haese **Friedrich Samuel Hoffmann **Cecil Claude Gorman ***"I think the voyage is fantastic. I loved working on profiles from my own watchlist. It made the learning experience much more relevant and meaningful. In my situation, as I've already had quite a lot of experience on WikiTree, my goal was to work on improving my skills in writing factual, thoughtful, interesting and sensitive biographies. Having a Voyage Guide to discuss some of the particular intricacies of the profiles I had picked was so helpful. I was very appreciative of the advice and feedback. I feel much more confident now in writing biographies for my ancestors and relatives. If I was relatively new to WikiTree, I know my profiles would have really benefited from mastering all the other skills involved in completing the PIP voyage." *Nan Hewitt **Emma (Gahan) Craven (1868-1936) **Johanna (Terry) Tynan (1843-1938) ***"I found the PIP voyage very helpful. She was always patient with me as I asked question after question. She also helped me work within g2g in my quest to have a sticker created for the I.O.O.F. I look forward to continuing to learn within WikiTree so I can leave a family history legacy that is not only accurate, but interesting to read. *Stephanie Ward **Granville Newton Haynes (1880-1964) **Ferrol Odessa (Haynes) Painter (1911-1975) ***I highly recommend the PIP Voyage. No matter how thorough your biographies are, there's more to learn here at WikiTree, where new apps and widgets are being developed all the time. It goes without saying that you'll learn the basics if you don't already know them, but you'll also be given style pointers, citation advice, tips on how to add polish with images and links, and instruction on some of the many tools and menu items available on each profile page. Every question I had was answered. All at my own pace and without pressure. Many thanks to my guide Kathy, and to Debi for adding this wonderful service for our members! *Veronica Williams **Rebecca Murphy **Abigail Courtney ***"Happy to have worked with you to improve my understanding of sourcing requirements." *David Urquhart **Thomas Blackman **James Cheyne *Kay Knight **Lucy Reed **Hannah Reed ***"I highly recommend taking the PIP Voyage. A definite “Must Do”. Personally, I believe every WikiTreer would benefit from taking the PIP Voyage. I would like to see a Mini Voyage for seasoned genealogists and a Starter Voyage for new genealogists. I learned so much about citing sources and personal knowledge citations, learned how to use some different genealogical sites, and learned a ton about formatting text. The profiles I chose for the Voyage were in pretty bad shape. One didn’t even have all the children listed! Spencer Lay Sr. started out with 3 or 4 children and wound up with 14 children and 8 siblings. Lettie Belle (Ely) Burrows had 17 siblings and 12 children. Probably not the best choices for the Voyage but my guide got me through it. I should be able to tackle just about anything now. Debi Hoag and her guides deserve a BIG Texas Size Thank You. Y’all Rock!!! *Pam Cormac **Isabel (Gammie) Fordyce **Thomas Edward Slaughter ***It has been an amazing experience and taught me so much. I can't say enough how beneficial I think doing the PIP voyage is. A whole rounded adventure that dealt with sourcing, citations, formatting, images, categories, style and so much more. I'd recommend the PIP Voyage to anyone, whether they want to create beautiful memorials to the hero's and heroines that came before us, or they want to take their genealogy skills to the next level. I do and will continue to use these new skills everyday. I have absolutely loved it, seriously...thank you so much. *Pam Dale **Jasper Abner **Robert Nelson Rose ***I enjoyed it and have changed my formatting a lot! *Dana (Camp) Gammel **Elijah Eli Bearden (1892-1975) **Bennie Richard Bridges (1890-1957) ***I am sad it is over. It is useful to have a second pair of eyes looking at the details and sources of a profile - especially when the profile is long. I found that Debi did not overlook any problems or insufficiencies, but she was also flexible in my solutions. ... I learned about ref name= and now need to go back through my profiles to eliminate duplicate sources." * Kaitlyn Emmett **Maria (Robinson) Tompson (1840-1901) **John Emmett (abt.1818-1892) ***"Thanks for all your feedback. It taught me a lot of things that have helped me with my own family tree ... Most of the fundamental concepts I know about profile texts on WikiTree came from the voyage. we've explored profiles with varying levels of complexity, which has enabled me to go from not knowing the difference between a source and a citation/reference, to comfortably applying them to profiles as if born to it, including knowing when and when not to use inline referencing. [My Guide] asked me to consider and improve on problems that I would have never thought of, [has] been very patient in clarifying my many questions, and [has] even helped me with tricky areas of research. A word and a phrase come to mind: Amazing...Thank you! *Sheryl Moore **Benijah Keener **William Anderson Moore ***I thoroughly enjoyed the PIP Voyage, and it was a fascinating incentive to work on my much-neglected ancestors’ profiles. No matter how much I thought I knew about WikiTree’s style, guidelines and protocol, I learned plenty of invaluable tips and tricks from my guide – Melissa. Her responses were timely, on point, and personal to my work. Great feedback and a marvelous experience! I will carry the voyage lessons with me on every profile I work on in the future and have already shared some tips with others. Thank you for providing this as part of the PIP Project. I excitedly anticipate participating in the PIP Project for a very long time! *K. Schreffler **Abel Cidney Alexander **Elizabeth Bickelman ***I very much enjoyed my time completing the PIP Voyage. It can be daunting stepping into a new space and learning new formatting and style guidelines, even if you've already done the research. I wanted to feel comfortable working on the profiles of my ancestors, and now that I have finished the Voyage I feel far more confident creating their pages than I did when I began. My guide was gracious and knowledgeable and patient. I had a lot of questions! As well as specific things I wanted to include on the profiles I wrote. She answered everything thoroughly and clearly and was pleasant to correspond with. She always had excellent suggestions and I am very glad that I decided to sign up for the Voyage. Thank you so much for creating this opportunity. *Joyce Rivette **Marie Eugenie LeGlue **Paul S. Mingus ***The PIP Voyage has been a very enjoyable experience. It has encouraged me to get past the bare bones narrative and to make profiles more interesting with images, tables, shared links to data behind paywalls, and more. I recommend this voyage to any member, whether experienced or novice! It has expanded my thinking and I'll continue to use what I've learned in the future. Thanks to my guide, Melissa, and her patience with me and the unavoidable delays I encountered. I really appreciated the stress-free environment and being able to go at my own pace. *Elsie Hagley **Frederick Olson **Edward Olson ***The PIP Voyage has been a very enjoyable learning experience, and has helped me to understand what a good profile is. I learnt so much and I recommend it to any WikiTree user. A very big thank you to my Guide who has been so patient and given me so much of her time, teaching me to understand every part of the training needed to improve profiles. She has, thereby, given me the confidence I needed to work with them, instead off being afraid that I might mess them up. Every mistake can be fixed. Also, special thanks to Debi for this program. *Carolyn (Cole) Napoli **Iona May (Eldredge) Cole (1894-1987) **Bob Cole ***Kathy was a wonderful mentor for PIP. I benefited tremendously from her guidance in editing sources. She has extensive knowledge on this subject and she was so helpful and patient during my learning process. Kudos to you Kathy! *Thom Anderson **Barbara (Wilson) Anderson (1833-1916) **Harry Stevens Brown (1855-1932) ***Your input was exactly what I was hoping to get and it shows that an old dog can learn new tricks. The top three are (1) theWayback Machine, (2) labels on images, and (3) Grammarly. Thanks again for the great mentoring! *Margaret (Dickson) Allison **Sarah (Tennant) Wright (1877-1958) **Robert Grierson (1813-1865) ***This course honed my skills and gave me further information on sourcing. The two main lessons were the change for Find A Grave (which had slipped past me) and the free image for Ancestry Citer (once that was fixed up for me). I also realised that I needed to change how I linked to ScotlandsPeople, so now do a direct link instead of a generic one. More work for me, but it means that people see the record straight away. There were other minor style issues that I am developing. *Bartley McRorie **Samuel Benjamin Holt (1879-1939) **James McRorie (1880-1969) ***Thank you again for the Voyage! I would highly recommend this process to any WikiTreer! I learned several things that will be a regular part of my profiles now, including placing a Familly Search link on WikiTree profiles, the Ancestry sharing link, and profile style considerations. I look forward to collaborating with you on a distant cousin in the future! *Anon Sharkey **Francis Donald Holden Bremner **Mary Carrodus ***I found trying to get the citations difficult but with support got there. It has helped me think about what else might go in a profile, the need for a sequential layout and also to go away from a profile and then come back with fresh eyes and further thoughts. It would not have been possible without the patient and encouraging guide Melissa. Thank you *Nigel Clark **Mary Ann Elizabeth (Stichling) Amsden **Frederick Somerset Richard Hunt ***For people interested in genealogy, WikiTree is the best computer application that I have found so far for the following reasons: a) The underlying principle that there is only 1 tree with all entries properly sourced, which has enabled me to link my ancestors with other relatives correctly and painlessly. b) It is free to use. c) The education and support processes within the system and from other genealogists that enable users to improve their genealogy skills step-by-step. This sets WikiTree apart from other genealogy Applications. The “Voyage” process is one of the support processes that works extremely well. My guide in this process was Leandra Ford. Rather than overload me with information “up front”, she worked with me step by step to improve the specific profiles that we were working on. Leandra provided me with links to the appropriate WikiTree tools when they became relevant to use with the profiles, and guided me in their appropriate use. Over a period of 3 weeks, she sent me a number of detailed emails which I will keep for reference as I continue to work on other profiles. She also ensured that she was encouraging and supportive all the way through. Great stuff! Thank you for your help. *Bill Feidt **Norma Marie Louise (de Guise) Bayless (1891-1973) **Frances Eva (Rowland) Walling (abt.1859-1941) ***A voyage well worth the taking. Kathy was a wonderful guide and helped me to think about my profiles from different perspectives. This experience will definitely influence the way I do my profiles in the future. And I intend to make regular visits to my early profiles and gradually improve them too. Kudos to Debi too for making this experience possible. *Sue (Smith) Knifley **William Gregory Newton **Elizabeth L (Richeson) Smith ***The PIP voyage was a great experience for me. I learned so much about writing citations and where to look for additional sources. It really made me realize the wealth of resources available online. Debi’s guidance made me look at my biographies and see where I needed to find additional sources to back up what I had written and in doing so I made other discoveries about my ancestor that i did not know. I gained the confidence I needed to work on the biographies of my other ancestors. I highly recommend the Voyage! *Fann Fann **Sarah Frances (Garner) Boland (1837-1912) **John Snipes (aft.1798-aft.1860) ***The Profile Improvements Voyage exceeded my expectations. The profiles that I worked boosted my confidence in knowing what to include for best practices in documentation. I am now much more satisfied that the work that I do rises to a level where others who read profiles that I add or update can better follow the documentation and grasp the genealogically significant details added. Kathy was both a constant encouragement and an expert Voyage Guide. No detail was too small to inquire about and get a timely response. *Mel Bishop **[[Hill-34072|Robert E. However, those features come with an overwhelming amount of material to learn. The PIP Voyage was the perfect solution for me. At the most basic level, the program provides groundwork information on style, sourcing and formatting. Perhaps more importantly though, it offers an enormous amount of tips, tricks and resources I would maybe never have figured out on my own. My wonderful guide, Kathy, was knowledgeable and kind in her critique and advice, and quick to answer every question; she provided invaluable support and encouragement during my learning journey. I really can't recommend this project highly enough, for any WikiTree user, no matter their experience level. I had a fantastic trip! *Dola (Nowell) Acree **Mary Grubella or Isabella (Nowell) Smith (1866-bef.1910) **Lela Augusta Nowell (abt.1886-1974) *Julie Weller **Samuel Banthorp **Polly (Eley) Rowe ***I am so grateful for all the help you have offered. I have learned so much from you, the general ways of producing an interesting read by utilizing the tools offered by Wikitree and how to access them. I would never have worked out by myself all the skills you helped me develop, not just the bigger ones such as 'tables' and 'stickers' but all the extra pointers you gave, I saved them to a 'cheat sheet' so I can add them easily to the rest of my ancestors profiles. * Jean Brooks ** Ann (Oughtibridge) Kelsey ** Arthur Seaton *** I have really enjoyed my journey through PIP. I've learnt a lot, which I wouldn't have by myself. I found it quite challenging at times, but my guide Leandra has helped me through, and given me the tips I need to improve the profiles I manage in the future. I would really recommend anyone who is serious about genealogy, especially if they are new to the site to do this, as I found Wikitree a bit daunting at first. I certainly feel more confident that I can now do a better job. Will now be very busy updating the many profiles I manage with categories and pictures and other improvements. * Bob Land ** Jan Bingham (Bartlett) Merritt ** Moses McElroy ***Thank you so much! My voyage has been really, really good. I feel like I know how to edit profiles well now. I feel motivated to do more editing and updating with other profiles on my Watchlist. I really appreciated the responsiveness I received to my emails. I was emailed back quickly and had very thorough and helpful feedback. I liked the little words of wisdom I received, such as the w w w w of sources as well as how I was pointed to many good tools on the WT site (Ancestry citer, Rootsearch). I also appreciated the suggestions for good habits such as making sure to check for dupes and suggestions before finalizing a profile. I also liked learning about how to use pictures and not have them on the right only. I learned to create a spacepage. I joined WT to connect with other researchers, and to get connected to the PIP Voyage was definitely a great step toward that goal. *Carrie (Hensel) Lippincott **Christian Bich **Lydia (Stokes) Wills ***It has been quite a journey! I had no idea what I'd gain by doing it, but I thought I'd give it a try. It has been wonderful to work one on one with you learning. It is exciting to have new skills to improve the profiles I'm working on. I hope to also lead by example and help people to see the vision of how wonderful a profile can be. I am so in love with Wikitree! Photos, bios, documents, collaboration, categories and the list goes on!!! ... I can tell I am much better at working on profiles now.I appreciate having a better understanding of the editing tools/templates available! I also enjoyed being able to work on profiles of people related to me, which made them more interesting (to me) than the strangers on the Orphan Trail. Following the PIP Voyage also encouraged me to look into an ancestor who, although he only had a short life, served in WW1, so I was able to find, and include, quite a lot of detail and have a full profile just in time for what would have been his 126th birthday. I joined wikitree in February of 2021 and soon became a fan of the inline citations. The only problem was if I forgot or misplaced some little mark, my words disappeared, something would be highlighted in red and/or the data doctor would point out a certain numbered error. I didn't always understand the explanation when I looked it up. I was a bit intimated when I read about the Profile Improvement Project; however, I joined. With the first email I received from my guide I felt more comfortable. I picked a relative who I felt close to from hearing stories about him from my mother, my grandmother and my great uncle. Henry B. Wolfe was father, husband and brother to these people. I had even searched and found Henry's original death certificate at the Oregon State Archives in Salem, Oregon. Alas, on this document where his death date was supposed to be was the date of his funeral. His doctor wrote a disclaimer under the date. My guide helped me work through this and other problems. She used tact and just the right amount of help. She explained the "wikitree way" more than once and in more than one way. Her examples were great. So, I had a great time writing my second profile about James Riley Crowley. He was a relative of my husband of whom I knew little. I did quite a bit of research on James and because of my guide and hard work on the first profile had a much easier time. I became convinced I could write good profiles on my own. She must have made an impression on me because I find myself automatically using what I have learned on each profile I create and edit. *Gordon Mac Rae **Sarah Lancefield **Ross Hockly ***Thank you very much for the journey, I enjoyed it thoroughly and the journey solidified various tips I had started to learn. UI am forever spoiled and will only be putting together well made profiles. Your help, Denise, was invaluable and my Wikitree journey will be the better for it. I will call on you when I need some help, thank you for the offer. *Debbie Ferguson **Betty Lou (Gentry) Weed **Cecil Earl Alberty *Ros Haywood (Fast Track) **Samuel Murch * Scott Fulkerson **William Mitchell Overhuls **Joseph Henry Withrow Sr *Tracey Bent **Elizabeth Roberts **John Barnacle *Kirby Mullenberg **Margaret Ethel (Centers) Scott **Margaret Ione (Howe) Smith * Audrey Crockett **Donatille Primeaux **Charles Frederick *** I hoped to achieve a greater knowledge of how to create and format a profile on a more expert level. I believe that I have learned a great deal from you on the intricate ins and outs of profile creation and formatting. I hope to continue to use this new knowledge as I create and edit profiles on WT. It has far exceeded my expectations on what I hoped to learn. * Sjana Lee (Dreyer) Bauer ** George Alva Cullins ** Jacob Kramp *** It was a pleasure working with my Voyage Guide. I never felt rushed my guide went through all the different aspects of WikiTree and how to make a proper profile, efficiently and properly. My guide also ensured I understood where to find and use all the different tools that Wikitree had to offer, and made clear and concise suggestions as to how to enhance my profile, while listening to my desires to keep it my "voice" and personal. This was important to me and with my guide’s suggestions, I ended up with profiles that both myself and my family could be proud of. My guide was always available, and responded in a timely manner, even when on vacation and the PIP Project was very workable with me while I was going through some major health issues. The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) came highly recommended to me and I honestly think this is a Project that every member of WikiTree should be a part of. I feel that I have grown and improved significantly because I 1) had a wonderful and patient Voyage Guide, and 2) the project is set up for one to succeed. I recommend it 100%. * Michael Black ** Frank B. Scott ** William Noble Bailey *** I'm relatively new to WikiTree, but love to write and have been looking for a good, long-term solution for sharing my research with others. I had little idea what to expect from the PIP voyage, other than it came highly recommended by two of my other WT mentors. My PIP guide was fantastic—she was full of tips, shortcuts, and advice, and had a wealth of conventions, standards, and frameworks to share with me. Kay was also generous with her time and is a fellow perfectionist, which I really appreciated. Before working with my guide, I wasn't clear about what constituted a very well-written and well-composed profile. I now feel I have a good grasp of the numerous aspects I must keep in mind and the skills I need to develop to produce great profiles. The time I spent on the PIP Voyage was a wise investment in improving my skill set, and I recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their WT profile writing skills. * Alice (Stephens) Thomsen ** Ford Mott ** John Walker Stephens *** I found the Voyage to be Exceptional. I am not new to WikiTree but felt like I just was not understanding Wikitree as I should. I highly recommend it, especially for each new person, but also to all Profile Managers who truly want to make their tree grow with full biographies, and properly completed. My Guide was Exceptional. I have to agree, she was "full of tips, shortcuts, advice and a wealth of conventions, standards and frameworks" for me to use as I move on. She reminded me how you need to keep rechecking your work, the smallest detail can throw the whole profile off. I learned so much and I know I will continue to learn from where she left off. It truly feels wonderful to see profiles on my watchlist finally complete with full biographies.

__TOC__ :Profile Improvements Project (PIP) Voyage 2024 Graduates ::& Their Improved Profiles : Voyage graduates, their profiles, and feedback for the first four years can be found at PIP Voyagers Improved Profiles 2020-2023 :These profiles are on the Voyagers' watchlist and are usually profiles for their own family. Voyagers understand that: * improvements may be made by other members * they will need to work together with other interested family members on stylistic decisions === 2024 Graduates === * Alice (Williams) O'Dea ** Charlotte Elizabeth Wolfrom ** Thomas Henry *** It has been quite a pleasurable journey for me -- I've learned so much more than I expected at the outset. My time as a voyager has been great. The experience did get a little uneven over the holidays, which was not a surprise (or anyone's fault), and it only made it a little extra challenging for me to remember where I left off after each disruption. I'm not sure what could be done about it beyond timing the journey to avoid that end-of-year chaos, but it wasn't a biggie. The best part was working through the process of crafting a profile multiple times, giving me a better sense of not only what to do, but also when to know when I'm done (for now). The guided journey was so much richer than it would have been if I were working alone. Also, I'm glad we kept the Voyage all in one email thread, since I'll now have a great reference to check later if/when questions come up. * Joy Brady **Thomas Ryan **Lydia Cushing *** I'm super excited about having actually completed the PIP journey and very appreciative of your patience. I was so intimidated and worried that my stuff would be awful, but in fact I have learned a great deal just by reading and moving through the PIP standards and getting your feedback. I am fairly certain that I would not have ventured into categorization, stickers, and other flourishes if I had not HAD to attempt these via this Voyage. I feel really confident to do right by the profiles I touch now. *Feargal Hennigan **Mary Anne Norton **Margaret Balfe *K R McDougle **Hinrich J. Viebrock **Odessa E (McDougle) Vreeland *** My Voyage had a little bit of a rocky start but in the end I really appreciated how my guide worked with my learning style to keep the Voyage moving forward. Before taking the PIP Voyage I was completely lost on how to properly cite my sources, what sources were reliable and available to all, and how to write and format a proper biography. I felt like one needed to be a computer programmer to figure this all out! I am so glad I participated in the PIP Voyage and I believe all serious WikiTreers should definitely do the same. I now feel confident with the new skills I've learned. Also, there are some really cool tools I've been introduced to that will make using WikiTree so much easier. *Vicki Heneker **Sarah Jarvis **Harry William Hornblow ***I have learnt so many more tips to help me with creating or working on already created profiles. There were quite a few tips and tricks in formatting I didn't know about. Denise was so helpful in explaining and giving advice and helpful tips, she was also very patient. Some were things I hadn't known about. I have found I now look to add more information where possible, as well as using images more in profiles to help enhance the profile and add some history, plus adding information. When I go back into my own older family profiles I become very aware of where I can improve the profile or correct things, especially in regard to citations. I would encourage anyone to do the PIP course, even if you are working only on your own family profiles. It adds so much to a profile, and gives a sense of satisfaction as well. I also work on the England Project and feel I can add more information and history to the profile of people who maybe unknown to their descendants. *Rhonda Wiblemo **Almon Bisby Sage **Myrl William Smith ***It’s been a month since I completed the PIP course, and I have to say it’s been the most valuable course I’ve taken in my 3 years on WikiTree. Regardless of whether I am Connect-a-Thonning, Sourcering, Data Doctoring, or just adding extended family to my tree, I use the lessons I learned in the PIP journey. It has provided me with a framework for thinking about my profiles, and has definitely made me a better Wiki-Treer. * Kimberly Latta ** David Manly Price ** Mary E. (Price) Allen ***This was a wonderful journey! I learned a lot about how to utilise the remarkable resources that Wikitree offers genealogists. It was also very nice to be working with another human being, who offered useful feedback. I recommend that every person, no matter how seasoned a genealogist, take this tour. I'm extremely grateful to my guide and to the other helpful people at Wikitree. I am also a little sad that the journey has ended! * Riël Smit (Fast Track) ** Frans Johannis de Vos *Stuart Goodall **Hamilton Hunter Peaston **Peter Anderson * Linda Richardson **Joshua Spencer **William Burn *** I loved that my Guide was so responsive and I didn’t wait around for replies. I felt that I really made good progress with the profiles and can’t believe how much you can do with a profile. I learnt so much that was helpful, my favourite being Sourcer. This has made it so much quicker and easier to pull references together. I added so many profiles and thought I’d made some of them look good before joining the Voyage. Now after completion, I have a lot of work to do, in making those profiles really look good. I don’t have any suggestions on ways to improve the Voyage as it seems to me you personalise the Voyage for each person taking the journey. You can’t improve on personalisation. * Nancy (Cox) Wilson ** George Munson Tipton ** William Gordon Conner

:Mission: The team will be improving biographies to a specific standard using a three level rubric. * Biography Team - These profiles will be chosen by PIP members from their own Watchlist (and whatever else you find) and will be worked to at least the specifications of Level 1 of the Profile Standards. The goal is to improve these profiles to the highest level that can be achieved. * Abandoned Team - The Closed Account Profiles will be those left behind when members have closed their accounts. The number of profiles for the former members will typically be less than 100. They will also be those Person Profiles that have been identified as needing help by being included in the Project maintenance categories. They will be worked, on the team member's schedule and without deadlines, following the guidelines for these profiles to Level 2 of the Profile Standards. If they can be taken to a Level 3, that would be even better. See the Abandoned Team page for further instructions. * Popular Team - These profiles will be worked on, without deadlines and on the team member's schedule, by those PIP members who have completed the Voyage, as the goal will be to create basic Voyage level biographies for profiles that draw the most visitors to WikiTree. The biographies for any nuclear family member of these profiles will also be built to the same level. See the Popular Team page for further instructions. :::As Popular profiles often attract people who are not WikiTree members, we want them to be as complete as possible and to make a good impression. ==Welcome to the Profile Improvement Project Category Team==
:Mission: The Category team will review profiles currently in top level categories to determine whether they can be moved to a Project category or to a location category of the same type. ::Some of these categories are gatekeepers and only to be used by the Projects. Others are for things needed by non-Project profiles. Both types need to have a lower level Category added to the profile. :: For instance 'Estimated Date' categories shown with square brackets, (:Category:Estimated Date) would be changed to shown with curly brackets. That would add the Category 'Estimated Death Date' but also the Research Box. These profiles will then be seen by applicable Projects and/or WikiTreers working on a specific category. When adding lower-level parameters for Category: Estimated Date, please be sure to use the sub-category names exactly as they already exist. ::Task List * Start at the Category:Maintenance Categories page and click a sub-Category ** Note that Categories have three numbers within parentheses. The first number indicates the number of sub-categories, the second number shows the number of profiles within the Category, and the third number shows the number of FSPs for the Category. You will be working with the middle number. The goal will be to reduce that number to 0 for each Category. * When the sub-Category page you chose to work on opens, scroll down to the 'Person Profiles'. These are the profiles that need to have a lower level category added and the High Level Category that is already on the profile removed. ** Some of the lower level categories to choose from are among the Sub-Categories shown at the top of that page. ** There may already be lower level categories that do not show under Sub-Categories on this page. For instance, under sub-categories in the Category:Conflated Profiles you will note that many of the states in the United States are not shown. But there are sub-categories already created for most (if not all) of the individual states in the U.S. Therefore, more research into the sub-categories may be needed. ** Try using the Category Picker button to find a Project or location category of the same name. See How to Categorize for information about the Category Picker. * If you found that the profile did not fall under a Project, you are welcome to improve the profile yourself. If you don't have time or inclination, the fact that you have moved the profile to a lower level will help those interested find it for improvement. == :The goal of the Voyage is to demonstrate the skills needed to improve profiles to their most complete state using the community developed Guidelines. New members of the Profile Improvement Project, known as PIP Voyagers, choose two open privacy 19th- or 20th-century profiles from their own Watchlist to improve. The Voyager and Voyage Guide collaborate to improve the profiles. When ready, the profiles are reviewed by a Voyage Guide. The Guide will look for the following skills: *ability to create detailed citations for each of the facts *knowledge of best practices for writing biographies *ability to link or add profiles for family members *ability to resolve suggestions for profiles *ability to include images *use of detailed locations (city, county, state, country) *ability to include appropriate categories for military service, cemeteries, and migration *ability to appropriately use sticker and parameters *knowledge of methods to search for possible duplicates *ability to cleanup GEDCOM & merged profiles *ability to find unsourced profiles they manage *knowledge of collaborating with Projects if a Project is co-managing a profile *knowledge of when to communicate before editing :Voyagers should be in good standing in the WikiTree community. If a Voyager is required to work with a Mentor, they will be placed on Shore Excursion during that time to avoid receiving conflicting information. :We have incorporated two rubrics into the Voyage as standards that can be used by both the Guide and the Voyager. Each of them has three levels. :The Voyager Team Standards can be used: * by the Guide to evaluate the Voyagers :The Biography Team Standards can be used: * by the Voyager to determine where they are with their profile * by the Guide to determine how well done the Voyager's profile is when finished :The Bio Team rubric will also be used by members of the Profile Improvement Project Biography Team. :Suggestions for improvement can be made using examples, links to help pages, and via email or chats. Which method is used is left to the discretion of the Voyager and Guide. If a Voyager does not manage profiles to use when demonstrating merge and GEDCOM cleanup abilities, orphaned profiles can be used to demonstrate those skills. : :When the Voyage profiles have reached maximum improvement and all skills have been shown, the Voyager will receive the successful completion sticker. :A successful Voyager is encouraged to review at least one profile from their existing watchlist each week. Sometimes that review will be as simple as reading the existing biography, and then fixing a typo or adding a newly found source. Other times, it may be a pretty extensive re-work. Which profile and what is done needs to fit with your lifestyle and research focus, so we leave it open-ended. :The goal is the steady improvement of all managed profiles. New records become available all the time, profiles get added which could be linked or might need to be merged, and we grow both as researchers and as knowledgeable users of WikiTree. It is a way to keep one's toes in our own genealogy and can help avoid burnout if we become heavily involved in projects. ==How To Join== :You can start the Voyage by adding an answer at the G2G post. ==PIP Best Practices== :Inline citations should always be for the source the researcher actually used to determine that the information applied to the person. Sometimes that means that the source will be behind a paywall because the record or image is not available for free. If a free index record for the same source is available, it can be placed in the See Also section for the use of other researchers. ==Orphan Trail Considerations== : The Voyage concentrates on biographies and generalized sources. If you need to learn more about specialized or hard-to-find sources for a country, check the Geographical Project list and click the link to answer their G2G welcome post. If they have a Trail, it's a great way to learn about the project's specialized resources : Project Trail graduates may wonder if they will learn anything. While the Trails and the Voyage are complementary with regard to formatting, etc, the Trails specialize is in how to find specific records for a particular country. The Voyage specializes is in making sure that any reader can determine how conclusions were reached by ensuring that the narrative is supported by verifiable sources. ==Sample profiles== :These profiles were created by PIP Voyage Guides and are offered as examples: * James Arthur Dodge, Voyager Guide Robin (Dodge) Shaules * William Brownell Meares, Voyager Guide Debi (McGee) Hoag *Lucy (Reed) Sanford, Voyager Guide Kay Knight *George Hepburn, Voyager Guide Denise Hunt *Nancy Jane (Bowman) Stanfield, Voyager Guide Elaine Martzen *Judson Kilpatrick Wiggins, Voyager Guide Michelle Ketcham *Frans Johannis de Vos, Voyager Guide Riël Smit *Joshua Spencer, Voyager Guide Linda Richardson : Emeritus Guides *Alfred George Whitehead, Voyager Guide Emeritus Aidan Bizony *Agnes (Park) Pretty, Voyager Guide Emeritus Amy (Crawford) Gilpin *Friedrich Samuel Hoffmann, Voyager Guide Emeritus Kylie Haese *Granville Haynes, Voyager Guide Emeritus Stephanie Mandarino *Eve (Spangler) McNicol, Voyager Guide Emeritus David McNicol *Barbara (Wilson) Anderson, Voyager Guide Thom Anderson *Sarah Ann (Witham) Tarr, Voyager Guide Kathy Evans *Abraham (Hertzel) Hartzell, Voyager Guide TC Duran *Isabel (Gammie) Fordyce, Voyager Guide Pam Cormac *James William Blackwell, Voyager Guide Melissa (Mutimer) Jamison *Edward Garwood, Voyager Guide Emeritus Day Garwood :A list of Voyagers who have completed the journey and links to their improved profiles can be found on the PIP Voyagers' Improved Profiles 2020-2023 and PIP Voyagers Improved Profiles 2024 pages.

==PIP Voyage Guide Cheat Sheet== Welcome! We’re glad that you’re joining us. Hopefully, the following will help you as you guide your Voyagers on this journey. We hope that it will answer your questions and be a resource for you in the future. Someone is usually available in the Discord #voyager-guide channel if you have questions that aren’t covered below. Being a Guide is a commitment and a responsibility. It’s also a commitment for the Voyager. It is expected that you will maintain contact with your Voyagers regularly. By this we mean, with occasional variations, every 1 to 2 weeks. Some Voyagers may tend to stray, staying active on WikiTree but not on their Voyage profile. You must stay in contact with them and guide them back to the Voyage. We usually have other WikiTreers waiting for a Guide so they must understand that this is not a cruise but a voyage. You are also a crew – Guide and Voyager. At the same time, WikiTree is supposed to be fun and the Voyage is a “work at your own pace” project. As long as work is being done, we should never give them an end date. We never want to rush the Voyager to finish the Voyage. More on this below under Shore Excursion. ===Voyagers=== As in everything, you will find a wide variety of personalities and learning abilities in the people you will be guiding. Some are NEWTs who have little or no experience with our guidelines and some are long-time WikiTreers who want to create better profiles and become more familiar with the guidelines. Some need to be led step-by-step through the points on a help page, while others can ‘drink from the firehose’. Usually, everything goes well, but on occasion, there is a bad match. If this occurs it is perfectly okay to ask to have another Guide replace you. And sometimes the Voyager may ask for that. That, too, is okay. We all learn differently. ===Starting out=== ====Trello Cards==== We use the Trello tool for working with Voyagers. It also has dozens of “Notes, Tools & Examples”. The checklists will not only help you, but they can help keep you organized. It is very important to have updated checklists if for some reason another Guide needs to work with the Voyager. Therefore, we encourage you to regularly (preferably weekly) update the Trello cards for each of your Voyagers. It should only take a few minutes. The card for each Voyager shows a process checklist for the Voyage. There is also a section for comments at the bottom of each card. Your comments are necessary and required. They can include information about what you are working on with the Voyager, how they are doing, if they are taking a break (for whatever reason), if they are being moved to Shore Excursion and why (very important), etc. They can be brief, and when necessary more detailed. Did we say they are important? It is expected that these cards be kept updated. NOTE: When updating the ‘Due date’ on the Trello card, be sure NOT to check the little box just to the left of the date. If you check that box the date will be shown as ‘Complete’ (green) and you will NOT receive a reminder on the due date. ====Guide Spreadsheet==== We use a shared spreadsheet to track items that you have discussed with the Voyager. It will show the Voyager's progress using the Rubric checklist. As the Guide, you will be able to tell at a glance what has and has not been covered for each Voyager. ====Shore Excursion==== If the Voyager is wandering too much or too often, or if they have “real life” issues, they can go on Shore Excursion (SE). This should be offered to them with the option to return when it is a better time for them. Be sure they understand that this is a ‘leave’ and not punishment. If the choice to leave is due to “real life” issues, the Guide may choose to take them back on board at the time of return. If the reason is lack of commitment to the Voyage, then when they return they will be added to the bottom of the “Waiting for Guide” queue. There is no time frame on how long it takes a Voyager to complete the Voyage as long as the work is consistent and regular. Sometimes there are extenuating circumstances for the Voyager or the Guide (illness, holidays, vacations). SE shouldn’t be considered as long as the Voyager returns after the expected time period. You, as the Guide, have some leeway on this decision. * If the Voyager doesn’t work on their profile for three weeks or misses three check-ins, they will be moved to SE * If they do not want to go on SE, then contact Robin, Debi, or Kay * The Voyager should be told they are being moved to Shore Excursion * Add Debi, Kay, and Robin to the Trello card so they will be alerted to the next steps for SE Voyagers * If you are not willing to continue as their Guide if they return, remove yourself. * The Trello card should have a follow-up date added to it that falls a few days before the date on the ‘Hold Request’ date on the profile(s) they are using for the Voyage (unless they have said they will return sooner than that date, then that date should be used). ====Examples & Help==== Note: Some of the suggestions below may overlap. You may find that some of them work better for you than others. Some find a combination of two or more of the examples works best. *Sample Introduction Letter - This letter can be adjusted to fit your “style”, but the main points should be presented in one way or another. ::Subject: Profile Improvement Project (PIP) Voyage ::Hello ? ::Welcome to the PIP Voyage. I’m going to be your Voyage Guide and it’s nice to meet you. I see that you have chosen to work on (name with link) as your first profile. ::Please do not change the Hold Request Research Note Box at the top of the profile or the Image or Clear in the Research Notes section. These tell others not to work on this profile; it is fine if you or I make changes. ::I recommend that you review the Goals found on the Profile Improvement Project page. You can also find links to example profiles that meet those goals on the Project Page. ::When I review, I will use the Level 1 guidance found in the Project's Style Standards to make suggestions for further changes. ::Here is a short list of the goals we have for profiles :*Narrative or timeline style :*Grammatically correct :*Past tense :*At least one well-crafted inline citation for each fact :*Links to the profiles of other people in the first instance they are mentioned ::You are welcome to work to higher level standards than are shown in these standards. ::I will usually check with you on the profile’s progress about once a week unless I hear from you sooner. Does that schedule work for you? Since life changes, this schedule can always be adapted. ::Keep in mind that we usually have someone waiting in the queue. If at any time you find that you need to take a break from the Voyage, please let me know and you can go on Shore Leave until a better time for you. This allows you what might be a needed break and I can then work with someone else while you're away. ::Please let me know that you received this email and when you’re ready to review ?’s profile. As we progress on this Voyage, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments. ::Welcome aboard! I’m looking forward to working with you, ::Signature *Notes, Tools & Examples - Found on the far left column on Trello – Contains information and examples for dozens of different items that may be encountered on the Voyage. You can clear the filters at any time to see all the cards. *The Rubric - This FSP shows the Voyager Skills that we want to achieve. There are three levels. At the least we want the Voyager to achieve Level 1, but we prefer either Level 2 or Level 3. If you are unfamiliar with any item on the Rubric, please ask Robin, Debi, or Kay. If you feel your Voyager will respond positively, encourage them to learn some of the less common skills, ex. ‘labels’ (alt. text) *Profile Improvement Project Resources is a quick reference for various Help pages. Be sure to refer to individual skills in the Rubric and to the Trello card in the Notes, Tools, & Examples list for further information, as applicable. *Adding a PDF to Voyager’s Trello card for 2nd profile - For instructions, see Save PDF of a Profile under Notes, Tools, & Examples in Trello (far left column) *Once your Voyager has completed the Voyage, if you feel they would make a good Guide, review the Guide nomination FSP. ==Voyage Notes, Tools & Examples adapted from Trello== ---- ==Notes, Tools & Examples== ===Active but non-responsive Voyager=== Sample wording: "Time for our check-in. Your last message to me was on [date], so I'm wondering if you're still interested in continuing by finishing up with [Voyage profile]? Or if you'd prefer to switch guides?" If they do request a change they will be placed at the head of the line as they are already in progress. Let Robin or Debi know so one of them can update the Trello card ===Ancestry Citer App=== Ancestry Citer App helps create Ancestry citations and builds the Templates for you when you input the URLs. Note: It can not create a Record Template and an Image Template at the same time. I usually create a citation using the Record template. Then create a template for the Image, that can be copy and pasted into the citation to complete it. ===Bio Check App=== App to review biographies for style errors and to find profiles which might need to be sourced BioCheckApp G2G announcement Help Page ===Biographies sections & subsections=== Some members prefer an outline style to a narrative style and that is OK. All varieties should include inline citations. Sub-sections OK, generally recommended if the bio is very long. ===Citation for Search Results behind Paywalls=== If a search result link doesn't go to a specific record when not logged in, cite as follows (example website, applies to any): scotlandspeople.gov.uk; scotlandspeople search terms (database names, dates, whatever was used), x number of results found; potential record (identifying data such as Ref: 123/1234); searched, performed, and record abstracted by member name on search date [Abstract of record: (include any names, dates, places, etc.)] This question came from a Voyager who had found a search result at Scotland's People but did not have access to the detailed information. Since ScotlandsPeople is a pay site, the search term link they included did not work for me. This is the citation I (Debi) recommended using in those cases ===Citation using Wayback Machine=== John Patrick McGee, Obit citation
John Patrick McGee, obituary, 6 April 2017; born digital, Carter Funeral Home, Garland, Sampson County, North Carolina, USA (http://www.carterfh.com/notices/John-McGee : accessed 20 May 2017). [saved to the WaybackMachine, 20 May 2017]
===DBE 962 checks for broken links=== From Data Doctors just after this new suggestion was posted:
User beware. I have several 962 that are the URL copied from an Ancestry citation, which I will fix. This is an excellent argument for always including the full citation, not just the URL. fact sourced to a defunct website that I don't want removed as I want to know where the assertion originally came as a starting point to finding a better source. Suggesting Wayback Machine could also be included in the help to find the content.
===Discursive or Explanatory footnotes=== From Sources Style Guide, references section
A reference may include annotations, i.e. discussion or analysis of the cited source. Alternatively, a reference note may simply be an explanatory note and not a source citation at all.
Also known as a discursive note ===DNA Triangulation as a Source=== Here's the help page on triangulation Ask Debi or Robin if help is needed evaluating the Confirmation statement ===FamilySearch Template Guidelines=== Links to FamilySearch ===FAQs on uncertain data items, including parentage, and use of research notes=== *Uncertain *Disagreements about Certainty *Research notes ===FindAGrave=== Template and help page. ===Finding Elusive Records in FamilySearch=== 70% of the free historic records on FamilySearch.org can't be found with a basic search. This video presentation explains how to navigate unindexed image sets and use advanced search features to find the records you're looking for. All of it is good. Total 56 minutes. There's a section about looking through unindexed images starting about 9:00 minutes. ===Finding NARA digitized images=== Anytime there is a US National Archives (NARA) micropublication number in the data on a subscription-only site (ex M397 Civil War Compiled Service records at Fold3), check this link and search for the number. It will then show who has the data. Sometimes it is available at a non-subscription site and sometimes (as in this case) there is a link to the images on the NARA site. If there is a link for NARA, click that. Once you're on the results page, put the surname you are looking for in the search box beside the micropublication number to narrow the results ===Footnotes go after punctuation=== Footnote indicators, according to most style guides, usually follow the punctuation. This post on Stack Exchange has a great comparison of a bunch of the different official styles and includes the few times when the footnote indicator should follow. Please review it and let me know if you have any questions. ===For Voyagers improving profiles co-managed by others=== Profiles they solely manage for close ancestors (3 generations parents, grandparents) reflects the Voyagers' own personal preferences on profiles for which they are the only manager. Voyagers understand that: *improvements may be made by other members *they will need to work together with other interested family members on stylistic decisions Also they need to understand the guidelines regarding Disagreements about privacy: *If the person was born in the past 150 years, relatives within four or five degrees of separation can control access and editing to themselves. See [[Help:Privacy Privacy]. *Family members cannot restrict access to their shared parents, grandparents, etc. That is, siblings cannot have separate versions of their parents' profiles, cousins cannot have separate profiles of their grandparents, etc. ===Grammarly extension for Chrome=== I (Debi) use this when writing narrative biographies. The basic model is free to use. There is a pay version but I don't think it would be helpful when working on profiles. The citations from FamilySearch usually cause some suggestions but I ignore those. ===How to include disputed origins and conflated profile info=== Sample explanation: It does not go above the biography heading. An example of the short paragraphs that go above the Biography heading can be found on the profile of Charles Darwin. For information about disputed origins or why two people are not the same person, it is better to use the Uncertain Family or Conflated templates to add a research box to the top of the profile and a third level section such as Disputed Origins or Easily Conflated under the Research Notes section. G2G discussion about this topic: Do we allow a text section before the biography section on profiles? ===How to see a merged away profile=== *Look at the Change Log of the current profile and find the statement has a comment (Merged OldWiki ID into RemainingWiki ID) *Click the OldWiki ID link *That will open the change log for the old Wiki ID *The top line will be an equivalent Merged statement *Click the "edited the data" link *The left column will be what the profile contained before it was merged. ===How to Source from Ancestry with an expired subscription=== G2G topic ===Image alt-text=== Things to consider when creating alt-text for images. This reason is included as an additional tip in the More Tips portion of the Additional Subsections part of the Biography FAQ
Help the reader navigate WikiTree by linking to profiles of other individuals you reference in the narrative, such as parents, siblings, spouses and children

When you find the card, note that the stated unit may not be exact. These are VA cards, not the actual branch of service records. The card will have a column of letters, some of which may have a number next to them. The number beside the letter codes will be the file number of that particular thing: *C or xC indicates that there may be a VA Claim; the x means deceased *T indicates they took out insurance *A indicates the insurance was converted to bonds *CT indicates the bonds were cashed in (circa 1936) These files are not the Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF) that were affected by the 1970s era fire. I've attached the list of all the different kinds of documents that can be ordered and which form to use to request the file. Be aware that, because of Covid, the backlog to pull files is HUGE. ==Voyager Onboarding adapted from Trello Onboarding Checklist==
Note: May need formatting *Send an intro email to your Voyager introducing yourself as their Guide. Ask them to let you know when they are ready to for you to review their chosen profile. Let them know that you are available for questions and ask them to PM you if they have not received a response from you within a couple of days (adjust time to your schedule) *If the Voyager is moved to Shore Excursion, a 'due date' needs to be added to the Voyager's Trello card (let Robin know) six months out from the initial hold date. New guidelines regarding Hold Requests https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Hold_Requests state that Learning programs may set end dates up to six months away. At that time the Hold Request Research Box will automatically disappear. The research note and the Hold Request template should be removed. The Voyager should be told this will happen when they go on SE. *Add Voyager Skills checklist when you get the request for the first review *Review profile and offer suggestions *Follow up - review whether suggestions were implemented *Review the second profile selection to verify it qualifies (managed by Voyager or has permission from co-manager, 1800-1999 dates, all linked profiles have open privacy). If a linked profile's privacy is too high, are they willing to add you to the trusted list? *Advise Robin which profile has been chosen so she can add the information and screenshots to the Trello card. *Add Hold Request to second profile with a date six month out; this can be extended later if necessary
*Add a Research Note for the PIP Hold Request:

Example: Are you familiar with Discord (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Discord)? It is a text-based chat program that WikiTree uses for members to feel more connected. The Profile Improvement Project has a channel there to ask questions and support each other. If you are new to Discord, the link on the help page will bring up the registration page. After you have registered, go back to the help page and click the link again to be taken to the WikiTree server. That will put the new server in the left column. The center column will have "#channels"; click the one about needing verification and follow the instructions. *Invite to the PIP Google Group including a statement that it is optional, but if they wish to join to add their WikiID when requesting to join. *If they haven't already told you, ask about their opinion and if it is OK to include it with their graduation info on the Graduates FSP
Example: How was your time on the Voyage? Did you learn things that will be helpful as you go forward? Do you have any suggestions for ways to improve the Voyage for future participants? *Alert Debi or Robin to Award Badge with message. Add them to the card. *Leaders will Award Badge with message, then remove all Guides from the card *Send graduation message
Example: Welcome to the Project, (name), and thank you for all your hard work on the Voyage. You have mastered the skills needed to produce great profiles and we look forward to working with you. *Consider if they would be a good guide, using the list set out in guide nomination. If you think this Voyager would be a good Guide, alert Debi or Robin who will add the "4 Guide Vetting" checklist to the card and move the card to the Potential Guide list. Set a 30-day due date and add Pam to the card. Don't discuss with the Voyager beyond a casual remark that all Guides are graduated Voyagers. *Add to Graduates FSP *Ask Debi or Robin to add the Voyager to the PIP check-in spreadsheet. Advise the Voyager that they will be part of the Biography Team, Level 1 until next check-in when they will have the opportunity to change to a different Team or add an additional Team.

Welcome to the Profile Improvement Project (PIP) Voyager Standards
Mission: To improve profiles by Voyagers to a specific standard using a multiple level criteria rubric. :The first rubric, showing Voyager Skills, will be used by the Voyage Guide to evaluate their Voyagers. The items outlined in Level 1 are the minimum standards. During the Voyage we would like to see the Voyager bring their profiles up to at least a Level 2, with Level 3 being the objective, if possible. :The second rubric, showing Category of Skill, will allow the Voyager to see where they are with their profile and by the Guide to see how well done the Voyager's profile is when finished. It will also be the standard that the Biography Team will be using to evaluate the profiles they will be working on.

Unknowns Team == Mission == : To make all Unknown profiles appear in related searches. NOTE - UPDATE September 19, 2022. This task is largely complete at this time. A few team members are finishing up, and Pam will check regularly to be sure profiles aren't created using these Aliases. : Wikitree has several thousand profiles which, instead of using the required “Unknown” surname when needed, have used what we call "aliases" – such as Uncertain, LNU, Not Known, or a host (60+) of other terms. A table of these occurrences, with stats as to how we are doing, is posted below. : These profiles are not searchable. Many are unconnected and unsourced. As posted on G2G recently,

"When profiles have the surname Unknown, they will show up in searches where a married name is searched, but there are profiles where the surname is not known. In other words, if you have "Elizabeth (Unknown) Martin," and you search for "Elizabeth Martin," profiles for Elizabeth Unknown are included in the search, whereas profiles for "Elizabeth X" or “Elizabeth Uncertain” are not."
: We need to redirect and update as many of these profiles as possible. We focus on Open (looks like a clear bubble with a white lock) and Public (green lock) profiles. Sometimes the manager is no longer active, and we need to go through a slight variation of the Unresponsive Profile Manager (UPM) process. Then, once the profile is orphaned, we try to research for a correct surname, and if unsuccessful, we change the surname to Unknown WITH APPROPRIATE RESEARCH NOTES. Sometimes the manager will work with us to research and correct the surname to Unknown if the information is still not available. == Task List == === Task 1 - Research the identified English aliases === :Please Note: Certain Aliases are already being handled by specific Unknowns Team members. Check the table below. Please do not contact PMs about profiles with assigned surnames without collaborating with the specified Unknowns Team member... : Take responsibility for a list of profiles using a certain Alias (in consultation with Team Leader) and work through the list to update them using the following process: *FIRST, place a COMMENT on the profile. State the problem and OFFER TO ASSIST and to source and update the LNAB or correct to it unknown. Try to find the LNAB – if you are successful, place sources on the profile. If not, leave research notes telling where you searched. Here is a sample note: ::
"We are working hard to reduce the number of “[uncertain]” profiles on Wikitree. The standard usage on Wikitree is Unknown; see details below to clarify why this is important. The profile [uncertain-XXX] for (name) is an example.

This was posted recently on our G2G forum by the Unknowns project: "When profiles have the surname Unknown, they will show up in searches where a married name is searched, but there are profiles where the surname is not known. In other words, if you have "Elizabeth (Unknown) Martin," and you search for "Elizabeth Martin," profiles for Elizabeth Unknown are included in the search, whereas profiles for "Elizabeth [uncertain]" are not."

I have checked for sources and not been able to find the last name at birth (LNAB). If you have learned the LNAB please add it to the profile. [or, I have added sources…]. Could you please take a moment and change the LNAB birth on this profile? If you manage multiple [Uncertain] profiles, I’m happy to work with you to find and update each one! Just let me know!

We would really appreciate this contribution to our collaborative WikiTree. If we can’t find the profile, we can’t work together to improve it!

Thank you.

Clear *SECOND, after a few days, send a Trusted List request. (I usually wait two days unless the PM has been inactive for several years in which case I send immediately). Here is a sample note: ::
I sent you a message recently about the --- profile for . This is a trusted list request so that I can update the profile, at the very least to correct the last name at birth to the standard Unknown [sometimes – if it applies - I’ll say “to use the sources provided on the profile”], and increase the chances that other researchers will find the profile and provide additional information. Just click on the link in this email to approve. I promise I’ll remove myself from the profile when I’m finished.

I hope you will collaborate with me.

Clear *THIRD -send a message to the Profile Manager. Here is a sample comment: ::
I posted a comment on the profile and sent a trusted list request about the -----profile for -----. I hope you will work with me to update the profile and strengthen our collaborative tree. If we do not hear from you in a week, we will file a request to have the profile orphaned. (Another option is to write "Please check ...profile for an update needed to make the profile searchable in the WikiTree database.")

Clear :NOTE: If the PM is active, it is a good idea at this point to also post a comment on the PM’s personal profile referencing the [uncertain] profile you’ve been working on. :NOTE: special guidelines for working on profiles that use the alias Anonymous, X or other single alphabet letters: * Does the profile (or a close relative) have birth or death dates? * If there’s reason to believe the person has no living descendants, was born before 1910, or is deceased, you can request a change (Hint - use the Descendants tab...it's genius!!). * If no dates on the profile or a close relative, can you determine whether 1) the profile is connected to the PM or 2) the person has living grandchildren? If so, do not request a change. ==== Unresponsive Profile Managers ==== : Unknowns Team process. *Follow the established protocol of posting a comment, sending a trusted list request and sending a message. Then after 7 days….. send Pam a note at her email. Include the following ** Profile number (a link to the profile is ideal) ** Current name on profile ** Name of PM ** Date the PM was last active on Wikitree ** Note if the PM has additional profiles with the same issue which can be addressed at the same time. :Here are two examples: *https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Not_Known-184 Odom PM Bandy-545 last active 2017 *https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Not_Known-197 Downey PM Downey-478 currently active. Also has -198 and -199. :Pam will then submit the request and let you know when we have a response. * This is a special protocol just for the Unknowns Team. Thank you! === Task 2 - Research native language alias profiles === : We also need volunteers who can work with non-English terms and profiles –Unbekannt (German) (and NN, also mostly German profiles), Okand (Swedish), and Onbekend (Afrikaans) and others still being identified. I am happy to show you exactly how to find these particular profiles * Native language words (ex: Unbekannt) should moved to the Other Last Name to make the profile searchable and, at the same time, easier for native speakers to find. * LNAB will be changed to Unknown so that the Wikitree database search routines will work with the alternate names : For guidelines on this, see: * special rules for required fields, first bullet point and the footnote: **why the same convention for unknown last names is important * only using "Unknown" in the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) * place alternate spellings in Other Last Name (native language "alternative spellings" of Unknown in our case) : Here's a PROCESS for working with a list of non-English Unknown (ex Okand, Unbekand, Inconnu, etc.) profiles: * If the profile has no dates, is not linked to other profiles, has no info at all, and the changes log indicates the profile has never had any info, send a note to Pam for addition to the list of possible profiles for deletion * If the profile appears to be pre-1500...sigh with exasperation (I will enthusiastically join you!!), leave it alone for now, and move on * Try to find a record for a proper Last Name at Birth (LNAB) ** if found, add the source *** If there is a Profile Manager write a brief "please update" comment to the PM on the profile asking that the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) be updated and offer to help. *** If the profile is orphaned **** adopt the profile and change the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) to the newly found name **** orphan the profile by removing yourself as the manager on the Privacy tab ** if not found *** if there is a Profile Manager, write a brief "please update" comment to the PM on the profile with a link to the rules about using Unknown and the reasoning for it. See first sample above. Offer to help. *** If the profile is orphaned **** adopt the profile and change the Last Name at Birth (LNAB) to Unknown **** move the non-English word into the "Other Last Name" field **** orphan the profile by removing yourself as the manager on the Privacy tab **** update birth and death locations to add at least the country ***** if there is a town name, use the pin icon next to it to open GoogleMaps for help with location details. Adding the location details might help someone going forward and it will show up on Unknown lists which will someday be categorized. ***** if there are no locations, check immediate family members for birth or death locations ****** if those profiles have locations, add that as an uncertain birth location to help future researchers **** add a married surname to Current Last Name or to Other Last Name if possible (often available, but not picked up by GEDcom imports). Use the conventions of that country or project. === Task 3 - Monitor for new aliases === : Find new aliases for Unknown: *Check the list of surnames beginning with U occasionally to see if aliases are in use that are not in the table *Use WikiTree+ to search for potential alias words such as Last, Know, None, Unknow, Name, etc. If you see an error message, click the OK box, then click the blue Get Profiles button in the left column. If you find a few, please fix them as above (and tell us about them). If you find a large group we haven't found yet, please contact the Team!! ** The search routine will start with LastNameatBirth=Last in the left column. To try other words, change last to the word you want to search. == Unknown Aliases and Counts == : The goal is to have the Unknown alias counts eventually reach zero. Identified aliases are below. This table shows only the number of Open and Public profiles using the Alias. When you click the link, most pages will open a WikiTree+ report for that surname. If you see an error message, click the OK box, then click the blue Get Profiles button in the left column. RESEARCHED profiles, where the real Last Name at Birth (LNAB) could not be found, should be renamed to Unknown. :{| border="1" class="wikitable sortable" |- ! align="center" style="background:#A8C3E0;"|Alias ! align="center" style="background:#A9A8E0;"|Team Member ! align="center" style="background:#A9A8E0;"|22 Jan 2022 ! align="center" style="background:#A9A8E0;"|1 Mar 2022 ! align="center" style="background:#A9A8E0;"|28 May 2022 ! align="center" style="background:#A9A8E0;"|3 Aug 2022 ! align="center" style="background:#A9A8E0;"|12 Apr 2023 ! align="center" style="background:#A9A8E0;"|15 Feb 2024 |- |---||||23||2||0||0||0||131 |- |------(x6)||||11||0||0||0||0|| 31 |- |-----(x5)||||24||3||2||1||0|| 61 |- |....||Elaine Martzen||51||34||15||8||0||431 |- |-UNKNOWN-||||10||9||1||0||0||241 |- |AKA |||||||||||0|| |- |DO NOT KNOW||||1||2||0||0||0|| |- |DONT KNOW||||6||8||4||1*||0|| |- |II ||||||||||||0|| |- |III |||||||||||0|| |- |Inconnu - Please do the following: # Add profiles and unknowns to your list of followed tags. That way you'll see all of our discussions in your [https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/following G2G Feed. # Add your name to the "Team Members list below" and update it periodically. # You may also add to your profile page. That will put you on the list on the Project Category page. # We use WikiTree's Unknowns Team Google Group for communication. Please add a message with your Wiki ID so that we can confirm your access. We also use Help:Discord #unknowns channel for conversation. Add the appropriate categories to profiles as needed. See Task List for steps to follow in determining the category. # Send profiles to the Review Team by adding a comment to the Possible Profiles for Deletion if :*corrections could be made but you don't know how or don't have access :*the profile has never had data and has never been connected in any way :*the profile has been merged so many times that you can't determine who was originally represented :*the profile was originally for a non-person (animal, organization, thing) == To Do List == # We suggest that volunteers focus on a limited geographical area with which they are familiar for researching and solving Unknown profiles. Focus first on Orphan profiles, and then move on to Unknowns in that same area [state, province, country.] Check with Pam to see what areas are already being researched by team members. # Use Name Fields to determine if alias is being used correctly. See especially the sections: "Use their conventions instead of ours" and "Specific Rules for Individual Name Fields." # Add appropriate categories to profiles as needed. See Task List for steps to follow in determining the category. # Locate profiles using an alias for either Preferred First Name (PFN) or Last Name at Birth (LNAB). ===Research Note Boxes=== :Estimated Date: Estimated Date is a Research Note Box. For use whenever a rough estimate is used for a birth, death, and/or marriage date. Estimated Date will add a category for any/all estimated dates and add the profile to one of the Maintenance Categories -- Estimated Date Categories. By adding a variable, the estimated date can be specific to all, birth, death, or a combination of these. For example, Death will specify the Death date is estimated. :Unsourced: Unsourced is a Research Note Box. It should be placed on any profile that has no sources. You can enter Unsourced without a modifier, but it's best to enter a country, state, province, or other place names. For example, France, will add the profile to the list of Unsourced profiles in France. === Templates === Click on the links to see what the template looks like in use.

Possible Profiles for DeletionClear ==Welcome to the Unknowns Team Final Review Process== : This team will concentrate on those Unknown profiles that have been referred as Possible Profiles for Deletion by the Unknowns Team and others when their research has not turned up identifying information. The referred profiles should have already been vetted and are probably more difficult than those from the Unknowns Team Process lists. ==Mission== : To do the final research in hopes of finding appropriate names for the Name Fields or connections in each profile. The Team Member will search through the profile "with a fine tooth comb" to try to recover clues that might lead to a valid name for who the profile was intended to be. ===Task List=== #Choose a profile from the Possible Profiles for Deletion list or a profile from the Unknowns Team Process list. #Look to see if the profile was created from a GEDCOM and/or has had a merge. #*If there are no attachments, review the profiles created at the same time by the GEDCOM. #*Has the person ever been linked to anyone? #*If so, can your profile be the same person as someone now linked to that person? #**Sometimes GEDCOMs will include an Unknown and a person with the correct name #**Check any AFN numbers on FamilySearch for any linked profiles. #**Check to see if the currently linked person was created by someone else. Someone may have created a profile with the name and then disconnected the Unknown. #**If a linked profile has a surname, check the ID number plus/minus 1 and 2 numbers to see if any of the profiles created around the same time might be related. #Check to see if there is a Profile Manager for any of the related profiles. #*If there is more than one PM on a profile, check to see if there has been a merge. #**In the Unknown profile change log, hover over any links to another profile to see if it is the same WT ID as the person who may be related. That will tell you if the Unknown belongs to the current related profile or the one that was merged away. #Search through the change log entries (data) to learn what the original LNAB was. #*You have to open the change logs to see what the name was originally. #Search through the contribution history of the person who created the profile to determine if other profiles created at the same time may provide clues or if there was a relationship between the creator and the profile you are researching. #*To find the contribution feed of a deleted PM, you must find the link for the original PM from the earliest entry in the change log for the profile you are researching. #*Click on the link for the original PM. There you will find the WikiTree ID number for that person in the URL. #*Copy the WikiTree ID number and then go to your own Contribution Feed and replace your WikiTree ID with the number you have just copied. #*From here you may find clues for last names or relationships. #Search the databases to see if clues can be found as to who the profile was intended to be. #See if the profile creator can be found (usually Ancestry) to look at their tree for clues. #*You can also search other genealogy sites (eg. FamilySearch, GENI, etc.) for family trees using names you have. #*Do a Google search for all the variations of the name. You might find a duplicate that already exists. #Check FindAGrave using a range of years for birth and death. (You can also do this on FamilySearch) #*If the person you are researching is a female, you can also search for the maiden name (if known). #Check for duplicates or GEDCOM imports that went bad and caused a marriage to not be connected. #If you are without sources, write to the PMs of any likely relations to your Unknown asking for their sources, if any. #If a merge is to be done, determine what the Name should be. #*If there are no sources, the Name should remain Unknown with extensive Research Notes showing any other possible Names with the reasoning behind those possible Names. #If the process is successful and a name is found it should be deleted from the Possible Profiles for Deletion #If after all these avenues have been exhausted, a name still cannot be found, the profile will be referred to the Team for deletion. #*Any profile that needs to be seen by the Team will be added to for the WikiTree Team - Review Complete. section #**When referring the profile for deletion add a brief statement in the profile and in the item for the Team as to what was done to arrive at the conclusion that the profile should be deleted. #**Add four tildes at the end of your statement to add a signature so that the Team will know who to ask if they have any questions.

===Notes on research and Redirects === By Steve Harris, posted on G2G March 2023 Corrections are always good for the tree. We just need to be cognizant of the history of the profile, the current state of the profile, and what the future changes to the profile might look like. We have to remember that every change made on a wiki has a "cost". In the case of this specific profile, Unkown-1098, I would say the change to LNAB is fine to make, since "Unknown" may unfortunately be her legacy here on WikiTree. History: No merges and/or LNAB changes to date (meaning no existing redirects). Current State: Correct (sourced) LNAB will be difficult to find, and many people have apparently already tried. Future: LNAB may never be found. Based on the above, we only talking about one redirect now, and if we are lucky, a second redirect in the distant future to a correct (sourced) LNAB. This small number of redirects poses no issues. == Resources == * Unknowns team Unknowns team home page. * Unknowns Aliases Tasks process page * Name Fields Guidelines for using name fields *Project specific Name Field Guidelines
