Introduction == The The Welcome Society, the premier lineage society for the William Penn Fleet has published a passenger list of the "approved" passengers of the fleet. While this list is not fully inclusive of all of the passengers (many ships have missing or incomplete manifest lists), it is a good start to ascertain who we "know for sure" was in the fleet. It is the goal of the William Penn and Early Pennsylvania Settlers Project that each known passenger has a Wikitree profile profile. There are many of the passengers who already have profiles, some who have profiles who are not represented by the project and just need to be linked and classified, and some who don't have a profile at all. Note: you will need to be pre-1700 certified and badged to contribute to this endeavor. == Instructions == Please navigate to the Penn Project Missing Profiles page. On this page you will find a list of each of the ships of the William Penn Fleet and further down on the page a list of each of the passengers. Next to each passenger is indicated whether or not the passenger has been added to the Penn Project. Profiles with an " X " in front of them are included in the project, nothing further needs to be done with these passengers. Those with an " __ " in front of their names are not yet added to the project. === Creating the profile === Then, create a profile for that person with the name that you see on this list. If one or more of the family members has already been created, go to their profile and add the new person as a relative so that the profiles will already be connected. You can find the list of those already added in the ship's category list at the top of each ship passenger list. After you enter the name and estimated date of the person's birth, there is a good possibility that you will have a suggestion that of an already existing profile. If you see that the profile has already been added, open the profile and edit it. If the passenger does not yet have a Wikitree profile, continue creating the new profile. If the profile is new to Wikitree, you should do your best to find out a little about the passenger. If you can find a source for them, especially one that includes their birth date, that is great. Use this birth date when creating the profile. If you can't find a source for the profile, you can still create the profile using the "generic" source listed below. Use an estimated date. If a child, use a date that is before the sailing. If the ship sailed in 1682, you might use a birth date of "born before 1681." For an adult, subtract 20 years from the sailing and enter "born before" that date. === Sourcing === Do your best to source the profile and add a biography if you can. The better the profile looks, the better for the effort. If you cannot find a source, you can use this source to get the profile started: :"https://www.welcomesociety.org/ancestors-approved-memberships.html." William Penn Fleet ancestors approved for membership: The Welcome Society of Pennsylvania. Accessed 16 September 2018]. Be sure to change the date for the day you enter the source and/or the last day you accessed the Welcome Society website page. === William Penn Fleet sticker === You can enter a migration section and some details about the sailing & include the text for a sticker: This: === Migration =
Penn Fleet Passenger
William sailed to the new world on board the William Penn Fleet ship Freeman. Will give you this: === Migration ===
Penn Fleet Passenger William sailed to the new world on board the William Penn Fleet ship Freeman. Note: be sure to use the Welcome Society source at the end of this entry. === Is the profile to be included in the Penn Project? === At this time, only passengers who settled in Pennsylvania and Delaware will be included in the project. Those who settled in West New Jersey, Virginia, New York, or other locations will not be included in the Penn Project. If you find a profile is already created for a passenger and they landed in another state, don't do anything to the profile except add the ship's sailing category and add the Penn Fleet Passenger category. Do not add the project box or the Penn Fleet Passenger sticker. To find the ship's sailing category, click on one of the existing profiles from the ship category page. Once you "edit" the existing profile, you can copy the category directly or you can use the category page name found at the top of each ship section. For example, the ship "Welcome" category looks like: : To add the Penn Fleet Passenger category: : === Project Box === If the passenger settled in Pennsylvania or Delaware, enter the project box, above the Biography line using the following text: Pennsylvania Settlers === Project Profile Management === Next, click on the "Privacy" tab and add the following email to add the Project as a member of the trusted list: wikitree-penn-project@googlegroups.com After you click "add this person," scroll down and then add the project as a manager of the profile. You can leave yourself on as co-manager if you wish. === Project Categories === Add the following categories to the top of the bio text area - ABOVE the project box: If the profile was already created and the project is not yet a co-profile manager, add this category: : If the profile does not have a developed biography (this will be most of the profiles), add this category: : Alternatively, if the profile doesn't have a biography at all, enter: : === Marking the completion of your work === After the profile is created, sourced, project templated (project box), stickered, and a biography written, return back to the Penn Project Missing Profiles page page and remove your name/date-stamp mark. Change the " __ " underscore to "X" and remove your name/date-stamp. To the right of the passenger name, in bold, add "added" if a new profile was created, "linked" if you found the profile and linked it to the project, or "New Jersey," or other state if the profile settled in another state. Remember, you can still create the profile for non-Penn passengers, just don't put the project box and instead put the Penn Fleet category on the profile. You may find it easiest to just copy and paste the "added" and "linked" text from a previously added passenger. == (FAQ's) Frequently asked questions == Question: I am confused on one of the passengers. The ship Submission arrived in the Chesapeake Bay and passengers landed on the eastern shore of Maryland near present day Easton, Maryland. The instruction for adding fleet passengers specifically excludes passengers that didn't land in Pennsylvania or Delaware. My ancestor Richard Radcliffe (also spelled Ratcliff) was on the Submission and has a profile Radcliffe-1186. The list of Submission passengers shows his name as __ Richard Radchlif. How do I link his current profile so someone does not create a new profile for him? Answer: Because Richard settled in Maryland, he can't join the Penn project but could join a Maryland or Quaker project if he qualifies for one of those. What you can do regarding this project initiative is to add the category for the Penn Fleet and for the ship Submission:
the second will put it in the category for the Submission and while not in the Penn project, will solve the "missing" profile on the missing passengers page. Also, I recommend adding a migration section and sticker: === Migration ===
Penn Fleet Passenger
Richard migrated to the new world on board the William Penn Fleet ship "Submission," sailed September 1682. I have updated the missing passenger page to show that Richard migrated to Maryland. == Conclusion == I hope these instructions are clear. If you have any questions, please contact me, SJ Baty via personal message by way of my profile page. Thanks and thank you very much for your help on this project.

Adventure loaded cargo bound for Pennsylvania for London merchant James Cox on September 16, 1682. Moses Locke was master of the ship. Adventure does not appear to have been registered from London, rather departing originally from another East coast port. Mr. Cox did not travel to America with the ship. Although no passengers have been identified as coming on Adventure, since all of the other vessels carried passengers it seems likely individuals did arrive with this ship. == Notes & Sources == {| border="1" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0" style="text-align:center" |- ! In the fall of 1681 William Penn appointed three Commissioners - William Crispin, John Bezar and Nathaniel Allen - to come to America and found a great City. Three ships sailed from England to Pennsylvania in late 1681 - John and Sarah, Bristol Factor and Amity and there is some question as to who was on each ship. The Welcome Society has Nathaniel Allen, John Bezer and their families aboard Bristol Factor, while the Allen Family papers and Oliver Hough Hough page 44 place the Allen family aboard John and Sarah. It is almost certain that Captain William Crispin did not sail with the others, as he died in Barbados after his ship was blown off course. Hough concludes he sailed on the first voyage of AmityCrispin. page 20. refers to Claypole's Letters quoted in Hazard's Annals; also Memoirs and Pennsylvania Historical Society, Vol IV., Part 2. Citing: Oliver Hough in "Captain William Crispin" (page 11), Regardless, John and Sarah was the first to arrive in Pennsylvania and her passengers were called the first landers by those who came after. The Welcome Society lists Silas & Captain William Crispin with John and Sarah, however as noted above Captain William Crispin's ship was in the West Indies, where he died, when John & Sarah landed. Back to the William Penn and Early Pennsylvania Settlers project page This Resource space page provides an overview to sources used by the William Penn and Early Pennsylvania Settlers Project. Project volunteers are encouraged to use these sources on WikiTree profiles. For a general HELP guide on how to create sources of your WikiTree Profiles, consult How we do Sources at Wikitree and also Style Guide for Sources. == Reliable and approved sources == ===Reliable Sources for Pre-1700 Profiles=== The general reliable sources for your ancestry for William Penn and Early Pennsylvania Settlers Pre-1700 Profiles are the same as any sources at any time. However, the amount of records for Pennsylvania pre-1700 gets harder to find due to inaccessibilty, unavailability and destruction of records. You want to find church books, ship lists, published passenger directories, Historial Pennsylvania databases, vital records, Burial records, miltary certificates, ect. Also SECONDARY SOURCES are important like newspaper articles, obituaries, some written genealogies, census records, voter's records, directories, ect. Microfilms from archives or digital images of records are avaiable from FamilySearch, Ancestry and various government websites. ===Reliable Sources with Conditions=== * User-contributed trees: Family trees published on FamilySearch, Ancestry, Geni, MyHeritage, Rootsweb, etc. If a tree cites sources, find those original sources and cite them. *Secondary Evidence: Biographical, memorials, historical journals, obituaries, published articles, ect. Double-check the facts and events by sources. *Published Family Genealogies: with citation of sources. i.e.,original location of source, publication of source and year created, page numbers, certificate numbers, ect. === Unreliable Sources === * User-contributed trees: Family trees published on FamilySearch, Ancestry, Geni, MyHeritage, Rootsweb, etc. If a tree cites sources, find those sources and use them. * Find A Grave memorials: Many memorials come without an actual burial place and burial details, and are in fact reconstructed from trees. These cannot be used as sources. Only those memorials with photographic evidence of the burial should be used as a source. For William Penn and Early Pennsylvania Settlers, these burial sites would be far and few. * Published databases containing information of uncertain origin: There are a number of "records" collections available on websites such as Ancestry and MyHeritage (and in some instance formerly distributed on CD-ROM) that do not identify their information sources and in fact are built in whole or in part from doubtful publications and user-contributed content. These include the "Family Data Collection" and similar sources associated with Edmund West, the "Ancestral File," the "Millennium File," the "Pedigree Resource File," and "U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900." * See also :Category:Frauds_and_Fabrications === Project approved source list === Note: this list is not exclusive or comprehensive. The Welcome left Deal, England on September 1, 1682 and completed her voyage 57 days later, arriving in New Castle 27 October 1682. Although they avoided capture by Spanish privateers, smallpox broke out on board during the voyage. As many as one in three did not survive the voyage. William Penn was immune, having survived the disease as a child, and spent much time and effort attending to the ill. On October 24th, with the Delaware Capes in sight, Friend Evan Oliver announced that his wife Jean had increased his family to seven children by presenting him with a daughter. To designate her birth on the ocean she was named Seaborn. As they sailed up the Delaware, Friend Richard Townsand announced that his wife Anne had presented him with a son to be called James. == Passengers == Sources for Passenger Lists :Ancestors recognized and approved for membership by the The Welcome Society Welcome Society :McCracken, George E. Try to find sources for ones that aren't sourced. *If there aren't dates/locations, see if you can find them and add with sources. If you can't find them, it would be helpful to add notes about where you searched so that others don't have to repeat your efforts. === Merge === *Check if there are any duplicate family members and propose merges when necessary. === Biography === *If there is a biography, make sure it is an originally written narrative, excluding any copyright or licensing violations (for example, not something that was copied and pasted (C&P) from Wikipedia; see Copying Text) *Rearrange the Biography section into a logical order, remove any GEDCOM junk and clean up after any merges. (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Biographies) *Make sure the profile meets our Profile Aesthetics recommendations (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Profile_Aesthetics and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:HTML_and_Inline_CSS ). *If there's not a biography, try to lay out a basic narrative and/or timeline of the persons life. Getting the key facts in order will help later. === Other === *See if you can add photographs, pictures, maps or other visual items. *Add categories, project templates, stickers and/or succession boxes if appropriate. * If you feel a profile is sufficiently "done", leave a comment for SJ and THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! == 5 Star Profiles == Grading scale: : 1 - complete : 2 - comprehensive bio (just needs cleaning and touch ups) : 3 - good biography : 4 - basic bio; has basic elements but needs expansion : 5 - stub; has only the most basic elements (name, birth year, source) : 6 - unsourced {| border="2" class="wikitable sortable" cellpadding="9" |- ! align="left" style="background:#52BE80;"|ID-name ! align="left" style="background:#52BE80;"|View Count ! align="left" style="background:#52BE80;"|Who's working it ! align="left" style="background:#52BE80;"| Notes |- |Edward Beeson (bef. 1660 - 1712) |5,212 | | |- |Richard Beeson (bef. 1684 - 1777) |5,212 | | |- |Thomas Hollingsworth (1661 - 1727) | 4,365 | | |- |Robert Vernon (abt. 1641 - abt. 1709) |4,311 | | |- |Nicholas Waln (1650 - 1722) |4,125 | | |- |George Maris (1632 - 1705) |3,583 | | |- |William Howell (abt. 1650 - 1709) |3,494 | | |- |William Cloud (abt. 1621 - bef. 1702) |3,490 |SJ Baty |2 - needs cleaning |- |Jeremiah Cloud Sr. (1658 - 1716) |3,124 | | |- |John Somers (1648 - 1723) |3,092 | | |- |William Buckman (abt. 1650 - 1716) |2,755 | | |- |William Evans Sr. (abt. 1622 - 1688) |2,681 | | |- |Cuthbert Hayhurst (1632 - 1683) |2,536 | | |- |Valentine Hollingsworth Jr. (abt. 1677 - 1757) |2,412 | | |- |Thomas Stackhouse (1661 - 1744) |2,411 | | |- |Thones Kunders (abt. 1653 - 1729) |2,235 | | |- |Ann (Calvert) Hollingsworth (1650 - 1697) |2,197 | | |- |Thomas Wynne (1627 - 1692) |2,043 | | |- |Elizabeth (Maris) Mendenhall (1665 - abt. 1705) |1,862 | | |- |Henry Blethyn aka Blevins (1643) |1,860 | | |- |William (Claiton) Clayton Sr. (bef. 1632 - bef. 1689) |1,744 |SJ Baty |1 - Done |- |Edward Jones (1645 - 1727) |1,553 | | |- |Ellis Jones (abt. 1637 - 1727) |1,300 | | |- |Miriam (Ingram) Short (1642 - 1682) |1,286 | | |- |David Ogden (1655 - 1705) |1,264 | | |- |William Cloud Jr. (1648 - 1720) |1,120 | | |- |Miriam (Short) Coppock (bef. 1664 - aft. 1726) |1,024 | | |- |John Bevan (1646 - 1726) |2,565 |Liz Shifflett |MC* |- |Thomas Lloyd (1640 - 1694) |2,258 | |MC* |- |Samuel Levis (1649 - 1734) |2,284 |John Sigh |MC* |- |[[Mildenhall-46|John (Mildenhall) Mendenhall (1659 - 1743) |3,846 | |Quakers* |- |Honour (Clayton) Brown (1662 - 1738) |2,833 | |Quakers* |- |John Beals Sr. aka Beales |2,644 | |Quakers* |- |Benjamin (Mildenhall) Mendenhall |1,989 | |Quakers* |- |Christopher Pennock (abt. 1645 - bef. 1701) |1,808 | |Quakers* |- |Thomas (ap Evan) Evans (abt. 1651 - 1738) |1,443 | |Quakers* |- ! align="left" style="background:#DC7633;"| ! align="left" style="background:#DC7633;"| ! align="left" style="background:#DC7633;"| ! align="left" style="background:#DC7633;"| |} ::* Co-managed by Magna Carta (MC) and Quakers.
