Clear *Q2282019 *WikiTree Profiles that link here ===Geography=== Chebacco Parish was a parish within the town of Ipswich in the Massachusetts Bay Colony (after 1691, the Province of Massachusetts Bay). :Continent: North America :Country: United States :State/Province: Massachusetts :County: Essex :GPS Coordinates: 42.631944, -70.783333 :Elevation: 4.0 m or 13.1 feet ===History=== Chebacco Parish formed in 1677, when a group of dissidents in part of the town of Ipswich hired a new minister for themselves and began their efforts to secede from the church of Ipswich. During their struggle for independence, they developed a separate, multi-generational communal identity, centered around the Chebacco Parish Church and recognized even by outsiders, who might say someone was from Chebacco, rather than from Ipswich. They finally managed to attain their independence from Ipswich in 1819, when the parish was incorporated as the town of Essex, Massachusetts. This category includes profiles for people who, during the period 1677 to 1819, were identified with Chebacco Parish, as: * Part of the rebellion which formed the Chebacco Parish Church in and after 1677; * Specifically identified as being "from Chebacco;" * Recorded by the Chebacco Parish Church as born, baptized, married, died, or buried; * A resident of the area known as Chebacco Parish. The designation, "Chebacco Parish," therefore refers to the Chebacco Parish Church, which was the initial hub of the community, then to the community which formed around that church and, finally, to the physical area of Ipswich where that community was located. Thus, when part of the congregation of the Chebacco Parish Church later split off to form a separate congregation (the Fourth Church), both would be considered "of Chebacco." Note: Someone who owned property in Chebacco Parish but did not live there or worship there would probably not be considered part of this One Place Study. Someone who regularly did business in the parish but did not otherwise interact with the community would need to be considered individually, and included or excluded based on other factors. ===Population=== ===Notables=== * [[Ward-3008|Rev. Gloucester, 1623 (Dorchester Company) Gloucester is a city on Cape Ann in Essex County, Massachusetts, in the United States. It is part of Massachusetts' North Shore. An important center of the fishing industry and a popular summer destination, Gloucester consists of an urban core on the north side of the harbor and the outlying neighborhoods of Annisquam, Bay View, Lanesville, Folly Cove, Magnolia, Riverdale, East Gloucester and West Gloucester. Early Gloucester Gloucester was founded at Cape Ann by an expedition called the "Dorchester Company" of men from Dorchester (in the county of Dorset, England) chartered by James I in 1623. It was one of the first English settlements in what would become the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and predates both Salem in 1626 and Boston in 1630. The first company of pioneers made landing at Half Moon Beach and settled nearby, setting up fishing stages in a field in what is now Stage Fort Park. This settlement's existence is proclaimed today by a memorial tablet, affixed to a 50-foot (15 m) boulder in that park. Life in this first settlement was harsh and it was short-lived. Around 1626 the place was abandoned, and the people removed themselves to Naumkeag (what is now called Salem, Massachusetts), where more fertile soil for planting was to be found. The meetinghouse was even disassembled and relocated to the new place of settlement. At some point in the following years - though no record exists - the area was slowly resettled. The town was formally incorporated in 1642. It is at this time that the name "Gloucester" first appears on tax rolls, although in various spellings. The town took its name from the city of Gloucester in South-West England, perhaps from where many of its new occupants originated but more likely because Gloucester, England, was a Parliamentarian stronghold, successfully defended with the aid of the Earl of Essex against the King in the Siege of Gloucester of 1643. {| cellpadding=10 border=1 align="center" |colspan=5 align="center"| Gloucester’s "address" over time (See: North American Place Names & Interactive map ) |- ! === Original 46 Purchasers of Taunton === The Cohannet Purchase was a major (if not first) purchase of land from Massasoit, the sachem of the Wampanoags, who claimed the territory. Other purchases would be added to the Taunton settlement. The following 46 were the original purchasers of Taunton in 1637 or 1638 (the exact date is not known as the original deed was destroyed but 1638 was stated in a later replica from Massasoit's son, Philip). There were a total of 424 shares and all but Mr. John Browne owned from 6 to 12 shares each. ==== Purchasers of Taunton ==== # Henry Andrews Sr. (abt.1608-aft.1652) # John Briant - probably John Bryant (1592-1638) # John Browne (abt.1579-aft.1629) # Richard Burt (bef.1583-bef.1647) # Edward Case - not found Mar 2021 # Thomas Cooke (1600-1677) # David Corwithy possibly David Carwithy (1604-1665) # William Coy - not found Mar 2021 # John Crosman - historian experts have agreed that this was likely John Greenman, not Crossman;

Part of the Dominion of New England, 1686–1688 Succeeded by Province of Massachusetts Bay on May 14, 1692 "Plimoth Plantation" (Newe-Plymouth Colony), 1620-1691 Plymouth Colony (sometimes New Plymouth, or Plymouth Bay Colony) was an English colonial venture in North America from 1620 to 1691. The first settlement of the Plymouth Colony was at New Plimoth, a location previously surveyed and named by Captain John Smith. The settlement, which served as the capital of the colony, is today the modern town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. At its height, Plymouth Colony occupied most of the southeastern portion of the modern state of Massachusetts. Founded by a group of Separatists and Anglicans, who together later came to be known as the Pilgrims, Plymouth Colony was, along with Jamestown, Virginia, one of the earliest successful colonies to be founded by the English in North America and the first sizable permanent English settlement in the New England region. Aided by Squanto, a Native American of the Patuxet people, the colony was able to establish a treaty with Chief Massasoit which helped to ensure the colony's success. It played a central role in King Philip's War, one of the earliest of the Indian Wars. Ultimately, the colony was merged with the Massachusetts Bay Colony and other territories in 1691 to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Counties and towns For most of its history, the town was the primary administrative unit and political division of the colony. Plymouth Colony was not formally divided into counties until June 2, 1685, during the reorganization that would lead to the formation of the Dominion of New England. Three counties were formed, composed of the following towns: : Barnstable County on Cape Cod: * Barnstable, the shire town (county seat) of the county, first settled in 1639 and incorporated 1650. * Eastham, site of the "First Encounter", first settled 1644 and incorporated as the town of Nauset in 1646, name changed to Eastham in 1651. * Falmouth, first settled in 1661, and incorporated as Succonesset in 1686. * Rochester, settled 1638, incorporated 1686. * Sandwich, first settled in 1637 and incorporated in 1639. * Yarmouth, incorporated 1639. Bristol County along the shores of Buzzards Bay and Narragansett Bay, part of this county would later be ceded to Rhode Island: * Taunton, the shire town of the county, incorporated 1639. * Bristol, incorporated 1680 and included the former locations of Sowams and Montaup (Mount Hope), which were Massasoit's and King Philip's capitals, respectively. Ceded to Rhode Island in 1746 and is now part of Bristol County, Rhode Island. * Dartmouth, incorporated 1664. Dartmouth was the site of a significant massacre by the Indian forces during King Philip's War. It was also the location of a surrender of a group of some 160 of Philip's forces who were later sold into slavery. * Freetown, incorporated 1683, originally known as "Freemen's Land" by its first settlers. * Little Compton, incorporated as Sakonnet in 1682, ceded to Rhode Island in 1746 and is now part of Newport County, Rhode Island. * Rehoboth, first settled 1644 and incorporated 1645. Nearby to, but distinct from the Rehoboth settlement of Roger Williams, which is now the town of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. * Swansea, founded as the township of Wannamoiset in 1667, incorporated as town of Swansea in 1668. It was here that the first English casualty of King Philip's War occurred. Plymouth County, located along the western shores of Cape Cod Bay: * Plymouth, the shire town of the county and capital of the colony. Also home to Josiah Winslow, who was governor of the colony during King Philip's War, and to Peregrine White, the first English child born in New England. * Middleborough, incorporated 1669 as Middleberry. Named for its location as the halfway point on the journey from Plymouth to Mount Hope, the Wampanoag capital. * Scituate, settled 1628 and incorporated 1636. == Possible Origins and Ancestry of Mathew Stanley of Topsfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony == There are several theories on the origins of Matthew Stanley (died 1686). Some suggest Matthew is related to the Hartford Stanleys (which seems unlikely). Possibly he was indentured (hired out) at about 16 which was fitting for the times that Matthew of Topsfield and George of Beverly are related to Christopher of Boston who d. in 1646. In Daggett's account of Attleaboro, MA, a Matthew Stanley of Martha's Vineyard who later settled at Topsfield is mentioned. The Saugus iron Works was staffed by persons from Middlesex. An Edmund Chapman settled at Marblehead, MA in the 1640's. An Edmund Chapman and his servant Matthew Stanley of Middlesex, England were pardoned by Charles. == Research Notes == Research notes by Stephen Stanley (Summary of Feb. 2018): ENGLISH STANLEY RESEARCH: Mathew Stanley/Standley was born c. 1628 in England. His birthplace and parentage, have not been proven, although undocumented theories abound. The most frequently cited, attribute his parentage to the John Stanley Family of Ashford, or Tenderden, Kent, and Hartford Connecticut. NO evidence of a connection between the Connecticut and Massachusetts Stanleys has ever been produced. In fact, it has been claimed that the IGI records of the two English 17th C. immigrant Stanley families, were conflated, and then, widely replicated, online, to this day. The Thames River district of Stepney, Middlesex, England has also been proposed, from the Staneley family, of mariners of Limehouse, and from the 1627 marriage of a Matthew Staneley (b.1608), mariner, and Ursula Dorrell/Darrell? of nearby Ratcliffe, at St. Dunstan's Parish, Stepney. No baptismal record exists for a younger Matthew, in Stepney, born to the senior Matthew and Ursula Dorrell Staneley. An East Ham, Essex England origin has also been proposed. POSSIBLE ENGLISH CANDIDATES: 1. There is a baptismal record for a Mathew Staneley/Staveley? born to John Stanley/Staveley, in 1623/24, in the Briggate district of Leeds, at St. Peter's Parish, West Yorkshire. 2. There is also a Probate record of a Margery Staneley, widow of Vicar Leonard Staneley, of Pettistree, Suffolk, in 1621, leaving her bequest to her grandson, Mathew Staneley, "...when 17, if he live." The father of this Mathew, is John Staneley b.1583, to Vicar Leonard and Margery, in Aldringham, Suffolk. No further Suffolk records on this John have been found, and no definite proof that this John, and the father John of Mathew Staneley born in Stepney, in 1608, are the same. 3. There was also a Mathew Staneley of St. Giles Cripplegate, who died in 1626, a servant of Barrister Augustine Garland, with no proven connection to the Matthew b, 1608, of Stepney. In fact there are two more Matthew Stanley/Standleys, of that time, in the London/Middlesex area. 4. There is recorded in the Calendar of State Papers, aMathew Standley, servant to Edmund Chapman, Esq., of the "King's Household," in 1640. He and his servant Mathew Stanley, were charged with assault, in a Middlesex Coroner's Inquistion, and subsequently acquitted, by the King's Secretary, Sir Francis Windebank, not long before the onset of the English Civil War. Edmund Chapman, of East Greenwich, Kent, kept the King's Armoury there, and was the grandson of the Royal Shipbuilder, Richard Chapman, of Deptford, Kent. Edmund Chapman was also married to Amie/Ann/Amy Brett, daughter of Thomas Brett Esq. of Terling Essex, also related to, and benefactor of, William Pynchon, prominant early settler of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 5. There is also a Matthew Stanley, who married an Elizabeth Wilson, at St. Olave's Southwark, in 1647. 6. Finally, there is an attestation in the Daggett Family History of Attleboro MA, that there was an immigrant Matthew Stanley, who, it is said, came from England to settle early on the island of Martha's Vineyard, in the 1640's. Source records for the Daggett History have been recently discovered, and are being cataloged, at the time of this writing. DOCUMENTATION CHALLENGES: The several Matthew/Mathew Stanley/Staveley/Standleys of early-to-mid-17th C. England, are thus numerous in the historical records, and not easily distinguished as the same individual, or even members of the same Stanley Line, much less the same as our Massachusetts immigrant ancestor, Mathew Stanley/Standley (1628?-1686), of early Salem and later, Tospfield, Massachusetts. Those Matthew Stanleys cited above, provide clues, even theories, of origin and parentage, of the Mathew Stanley Line of Massachusetts. Future English Stanley DNA testing may shed some further light on our Mathew's geographical origins. (My own Ancestry and Family Tree Stanley DNA profiles have been posted online, to enable genetic comparisons.) == Sources == :This list was copied from Mathew Stanley's profile. * Dow, George Francis. A part of Plymouth Colony, 1622-1630 A part of Massachusetts Bay Colony, in 1630 Succeeded by Weymouth, Massachusetts, in 1635 Wessagusset Colony, 1622-1635 A failed colony The site of Weymouth first saw European inhabitants in 1622 as Wessagusset Colony, a colony founded by Thomas Weston, who had been the main backer of the Plymouth settlement. The settlement was a failure. The sixty men taken from London were ill-prepared for the hardships required for survival. They also may have lacked the motivation of the Pilgrims as this colony was purely economic in motivation and the men had not brought their families. By winter, poor planning and bad management led to supplies running out. With the Plymouth colonists having few supplies to share, the Weymouth men began to steal from the local Massachusetts nation. Foraging in cooperation with the Pilgrims and trading with Natives was insufficient, and some colonists began to steal from the natives. By now, many in the colony were ill and all forms of law and order had broken down. The lowest point came when a healthy settler was caught stealing supplies from the Massachusetts and the Massachusetts leaders demanded the thief's execution; the Weymouth men complied but either executed or failed to substitute for execution a dying, sick settler instead. By April 1623, word of conflict between Native Americans and the Virginia colonists had reached the north and this increased the tension between the two groups. Massachusetts and other native groups began plotting to attack and destroy what was left of the floundering Wessagusset colony and possibly the more successful Plymouth Colony. Massasoit heard about it and sent word to Plymouth. Bradford, fearing that Plymouth would also be destroyed, sent Myles Standish to Weymouth with the Plymouth militia to end the threat. Under a banner of truce Standish lured five of the more bellicose Massachusetts Natives inside the stockade. There, after a brief struggle, the native leaders were killed. Ten of the original sixty had starved to death and two others had been killed in conflict with the Natives. Forty-five colonists went north joined Plymouth or went north to Maine, and from there most returned to England. The three who remained were subsequently killed by Native Americans. Robert Gorges attempted to form a colony at the site later that year as the center of a more royalist and Anglican system of government for New England. He brought William Morrell as religious leader and expected Governor Bradford to acknowledge his supremacy and act as his agent Within weeks the New England winter caused Gorges to leave with most of the settlers. Those who remained formed the nucleus of the permanent settlement. In 1630 it was officially incorporated into the Massachusetts Bay Colony and in 1635 with the addition of 100 families under the leadership of Joseph Hull the name of the town was changed to Weymouth. While the integration of these groups did not commence without difficulty, especially due to conflicting pressures from the Puritans of Boston and the Pilgrims of Plymouth, Weymouth was a stable and prominent town with its current boundaries by 1635.
