Switzerland > Canton of Uri == Canton of Uri == Located in central Switzerland on the north side of the Alps you will find the Canton of Uri. The capital is the city of Altdorf. The official language is German and until 2005 the official required second language taught in schools was Italian at which point it was changed to English. Cities: *Altdorf, Andermatt, Attinghausen, Bauen, Bürglen, Erstfeld, Flüelen, Göschenen, Gurtnellen, Hospental, Isenthal, Realp, Schattdorf, Seedorf, Seelisberg, Silenen, Sisikon, Spiringen, Unterschächen, Wassen == Genealogy == For onsite genealogy, the first stop will most likely be: :State Archives Uri ::Bahnhofstrasse 13, 6460 Altdorf, Germany ::Telephone 041 875 22 21 ::Fax 041 875 22 26 ::Email staatsarchiv@ur.ch :Here they have accumulated records for the entire canton. Included in their collection are the Family Stammbuchs which are records of each family name and the male lines from a given ancestor. Some surnames have multiple Stammbuchs such as the Regli surname. The Stammbuchs I have seen go back to the centuries, and are organized by the area in which the line originated. === Staumbuch Collection === :This is a collection of all of the family names. Each individual born in the canton is recorded in these books. It contains marriage information, parent information and descendant information. If a date is not listed, I have been using the following estimating practice, 20 at first marrriage, then if no marriage date, 20 at first child. If the individual is listed in a family group, but lacking their birthdate, I have been adding one or two years to the birth year of the next older child. :In Dec 2017 The entire Stammbuch collection has come online. The quality of the images are exceptional. It is free. Some go back to the early 1600's. Though the writing is an old version of Swiss/German a good percentage of the information is accessible to the English speaker. :Uri Stammbuch Archive :There is a group of family researchers who are transcribing the Urner tribe book and posting the results on the Internet. ::urnergeschlecter :The work has only begun and is very large. So it will be a long time before all families are published on the Internet. :Lance Martin has been working on transcribing these for wikitree. The Stammbuch resources can be found here; https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Martin-15906%2C_Kanton_Uri_Stammbuch === Wikitree Resources === ::Regli Family Shield Scrolls ::Regli Family Book
