== General Information == Greater Poland Voivodeship (Polish: Województwo wielkopolskie; [vɔjɛˈvut͡stfɔ vjɛlkɔˈpɔlskʲɛ]), also known as Wielkopolska Voivodeship, Wielkopolska Province,[2] or Greater Poland Province, is a voivodeship, or province, in west-central Poland. It was created on 1 January 1999 out of the former Poznań, Kalisz, Konin, Piła and Leszno Voivodeships, pursuant to the Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998. Greater Poland Voivodeship is divided into 35 counties (powiats): 4 city-counties, and 31 land-counties. These are further divided into 226 communities (gminas).
== Historical Categories of Interest == Finding places in modern Poland, or some other countries, that were once part of Germany can be difficult. This website, Kartenmeister can be helpful. ==Historical Timeline == *1385 - 1569 = Kingdom of Poland *1569 - 1772 = (generally) Prowincja Wielkopolska, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth *1768 = a new Gniezno Voivodeship was formed out of the northern part of Kalisz Voivodeship. However more far-reaching changes would come with the Partitions of Poland. *1772 = In the first partition northern parts of Greater Poland along the Noteć (German Netze) were taken over by Prussia, becoming the Netze District. *1793 = In the second partition the whole of Greater Poland was absorbed by Prussia, becoming part of the province of South Prussia. *1806 = The Greater Poland Uprising of 1806 led to the region's becoming part of the Napoleonic Duchy of Warsaw. *1815 = Following the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Greater Poland was again partitioned, with the western part (including Poznań) going to Prussia, and the eastern part joining the Russian-controlled Kingdom of Poland. Western Greater Poland became the Grand Duchy of Posen and eventually the Province of Posen. *1918 - 1919 = Following the end of World War I, the Greater Poland Uprising (1918–1919). *1921 - 1939 = Most of the region became part of the newly independent Polish state, forming most of Poznań Voivodeship (1921–1939). Northern and some western parts of Greater Poland remained in Germany, where they formed much of the province of Posen-West Prussia (1922–1938), whose capital was Schneidemühl (Piła). Second Polish Republic. *1939 - 1945 = Greater Poland was incorporated into Nazi Germany, becoming the province called Reichsgau Posen. *1947 - 1952 = Poznań Voivodeship, Republic of Poland *1952 - 1975 = Poznań Voivodeship, Polish People’s Republic *1975 - 1999 = With the reforms of 1975 this was divided into smaller provinces (the voivodeships of Kalisz, Konin, Leszno and Piła, and a smaller Poznań Voivodeship). *1999 - Present = The present-day Greater Poland Voivodeship, again with Poznań as its capital, was created in 1999. ==General Information== "The Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship was created on 1 January 1999, as a result of the Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998. It consisted of territory from the former Bydgoszcz, Toruń and Włocławek Voivodeships. It was previously divided between the region of Kuyavia and the Polish fiefdom of Royal Prussia. Of the two principal cities of today's Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodeship, one (Bydgoszcz) was historically located in Kuyavia, whilst the other (Toruń) was an important town of Royal Prussia. The functions of regional capital are split between Bydgoszcz and Toruń. Bydgoszcz serves as the seat of the centrally appointed governor or voivode (Polish: wojewoda), while Toruń is the seat of the elected Regional Assembly (sejmik), and of the executive elected by that assembly, headed by the voivodeship marshal (marszałek województwa). The Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship is bordered by five other voivodeships. These are Pomeranian Voivodeship to the north, Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship to the north-east, Masovian Voivodeship to the east, Łódź Voivodeship across a short boundary to the south, and Greater Poland Voivodeship to the south and west." Wikipedia: Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship The city of Toruń is recognized as the home of the father of modern astronomy, Mikołaj Kopernik, who is commonly known as Nicholas Copernicus.

Łódź Voivodeship (also known as Łódź Province, or by its Polish name of województwo łódzkie) is a province (voivodeship) in central Poland. It was created on 1 January 1999 out of the former Łódź Voivodeship (1975–1999) and the Sieradz, Piotrków Trybunalski and Skierniewice Voivodeships and part of Płock Voivodeship, pursuant to the Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998. The province is named after its capital and largest city, Łódź. Łódź Voivodeship is bordered by six other voivodeships: Masovian to the north and east, Świętokrzyskie to the south-east, Silesian to the south, Opole to the south-west, Greater Poland to the west, and Kuyavian-Pomeranian for a short stretch to the north. Its territory belongs to three historical provinces of Poland – Masovia (in the east), Greater Poland (in the west) and Lesser Poland (in the southeast, around Opoczno)." Łódź Voivodeship is divided into 24 counties (powiats): 3 city counties and 21 land counties. These are further divided into 177 gminas.

Polish: województwo dolnośląskie
Capital: Wrocław
Official Website
"The voivodeship was created on 1 January 1999 out of the former Wrocław, Legnica, Wałbrzych and Jelenia Góra Voivodeships, following the Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998. It covers an area of 19,946 square kilometres (7,701 sq mi), and as of 2013 has a total population of 2, 914, 362. Although much of the region is relatively low-lying it also includes Sudeten Foreland and part of the Sudetes mountain range running along the Polish/Czech border. Popular ski resorts in Lower Silesian Voivodeship include Karpacz and Szklarska Poręba in the Karkonosze mountains. Other important tourist destinations in the voivodeship include the chief city, Wrocław, as well as the towns of Jelenia Góra and Legnica. The town of Boleslawiec is famed for its pottery. The voivodeship has the largest number of spa towns in Poland: Cieplice Śląskie-Zdrój, Czerniawa-Zdrój, Długopole-Zdrój, Duszniki-Zdrój, Jedlina-Zdrój, Kudowa-Zdrój, Lądek-Zdrój, Polanica-Zdrój, Przerzeczyn-Zdrój, Szczawno-Zdrój, Świeradów-Zdrój. Lower Silesian Voivodeship is bordered by Lubusz Voivodeship to the north-west, Greater Poland Voivodeship to the north-east, Opole Voivodeship to the south-east, the Czech Republic to the south, and Germany (the State of Saxony) to the west." Lower Silesia Voivodeship is divided into 30 counties (powiats), four of which are city counties. These are further divided into 169 gminas. == Historical Categories == Finding places in modern Poland, or some other countries, that were once part of Germany can be difficult. "Lubusz Voivodeship, or Lubuskie Province (Polish: województwo lubuskie), is a voivodeship (province) in western Poland. It was created on January 1, 1999, out of the former Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona Góra Voivodeships, pursuant to the Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998. The province's name recalls the historic Lubusz Land [2] (Lebus or Lubus), although parts of the voivodeship belong to the historic regions of Silesia, Greater Poland and Lusatia. Until 1945, it mainly formed the Neumark within the Prussian Province of Brandenburg. The functions of regional capital are shared between two cities: Gorzów Wielkopolski and Zielona Góra. Gorzów serves as the seat of the centrally appointed voivode or governor, while Zielona Góra is the seat of the elected regional assembly (sejmik) and the executive elected by that assembly, headed by the marszałek. The region is mainly flat, with many lakes and woodlands. In the south, around Zielona Góra, grapes are cultivated. Lubusz Voivodeship borders West Pomeranian Voivodeship to the north, Greater Poland Voivodeship to the east, Lower Silesian Voivodeship to the south, and Germany (Brandenburg and Saxony) to the west." Lubusz Voivodeship, Wikipedia Lubusz Voivodeship is divided into 14 counties (powiats): 2 city counties and 12 land counties. These are further divided into 83 gminas.

== General Information == The "Masovian Voivodeship or Mazovia Province (Polish: województwo mazowieckie), is the largest and most populous of the sixteen Polish provinces, or voivodeships, created in 1999. It occupies 35,579 square kilometres (13,737 sq mi) of east-central Poland, and has 5,324,500 inhabitants. Its principal cities are Warsaw (1.729 million) in the centre of the Warsaw metropolitan area, Radom (226,000) in the south, Płock (127,000) in the west, Siedlce (77,000) in the east, and Ostrołęka (55,000) in the north. The capital of the voivodeship is the national capital, Warsaw. The province was created on January 1, 1999, out of the former Warsaw, Płock, Ciechanów, Ostrołęka, Siedlce and Radom Voivodeships, pursuant to the Polish local government reforms adopted in 1998. The province's name recalls the traditional name of the region, Mazowsze (sometimes rendered in English as "Masovia"), with which it is roughly coterminous. However, southern part of the voivodeship, with Radom, historically belongs to Małopolska (Lesser Poland), while Łomża and its surroundings, even though historically part of Masovia, now is part of Podlaskie Voivodeship. It is bordered by six other voivodeships: Warmian-Masurian to the north, Podlaskie to the north-east, Lublin to the south-east, Świętokrzyskie to the south, Łódź to the south-west, and Kuyavian-Pomeranian to the north-west." "Masovian Voivodeship is divided into 42 counties (powiats): 5 city counties (miasto na prawach powiatu) and 37 "land counties" (powiat ziemski). These are subdivided into 314 gminas, which include 85 "urban gminas"." Wikipedia: Masovian Voivodeship

The province's name derives from that of the region's capital and largest city, Opole. It is part of Upper Silesia. A relatively large German minority, with representatives in the Sejm, lives in the voivodeship, and the German language is co-official in 28 communes. It comprised much of the region of Upper Silesia and was eventually divided into two government regions (Regierungsbezirke) called Kattowitz (1939-1945), and Oppeln (1819-1945). The provincial capital was Oppeln (1919–1938) and Kattowitz (1941–1945), while other major towns included Beuthen, Gleiwitz, Hindenburg O.S., Neiße, Ratibor and Auschwitz, added in 1941 (the place of future extermination of Jews in World War II). == General Information == Podlaskie Voivodeship or Podlasie Province (Polish: Województwo podlaskie, is a voivodeship (province) in northeastern Poland. The name of the province and its territory correspond to the historic region of Podlachia. The capital and largest city is Białystok. Podlaskie is the land of the confluence of cultures – Polish, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, Jewish and Tatar – and is indicative of the ethnic territories limits. Eastward of Podlaskie lie historic Polish lands, which are now part of Ukraine and Belarus and Lithuania. Today, mainly Polish and Ruthenian (Ukrainian and Belarusian) are spoken in Podlaskie, while Lithuanian is preserved by the small but compact Lithuanian minority concentrated in the Sejny County. Podlaskie is the most diverse of all Polish voivodships. The area has been inhabited for centuries by members of different nations and religions: Poles, Jews, Belarusians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Rusyns, Romani, Lipka Tatars and Filippians. If you are a member of the Russian Roots Project, please add your name here and list what you're working on. thanks! SJ Baty - developing the project page and recruiting new members. === Participants === * Andy Gürth - I am German and live in Germany. Some of my ancestors emigrated as German settlers from the Electoral Palatinate directly to America (USA or previous colonies and Canada). Others first emigrated from the Electoral Palatinate to Volhynia and Galicia and some went on from there to Bessarabia and Bukovina. There are also Volga Germans and settlers who resided in former Polish territories, which were then annexed by the Soviet Union with the Hitler-Stalin Pact. Many were deported to Siberia or the Kazakh steppes during the First World War and afterwards, or fell victim to Stalinist terror. Beginning in the 19th century and finally with the onset of repressive measures by the Soviets in the 20th century, those who were able, left their settlements and emigrated to America (USA and Canada). Others resettled in the Warthegau in today's Poland and fled to Germany at the end of the war. *Ann Sadler Trying to sort the medieval Rurikid dynasty out at present most of whom have incorrect LNAB. Russian speaker although a little rusty. *Alice Stephens I am working on the Profile of Boris Krapivan and his family. I do not know of any ancestral relationship to Russia, however, I do have family members by marriage who have Russian Roots. The family members, etc immigrated to the United States. I look forward to working on this Project.

==About Volhynia== The Germans from Russia were descendents of ethnic Germans who settled in Russia in the years about 1763 through 1862. By the end of the 19th century, Volhynia had over 200,000 German settlers. The Germans in Volhynia were scattered about in over 1400 villages. Though the population peaked in 1900, many Germans had already begun leaving Volhynia in the late 1880's for North America, especially to the midwestern plains of the United States and Canada. Volhynia itself was a gubernia, or province, of the Russian Empire until 1919, when the western part of Volhynia once again became part of Poland. In 1945, the entire area of the Volhynia Gubernia was absorbed into the Soviet Union, but the gubernia system was no longer used and the Volhynia name was used to identify a smaller region, called an oblast, in the western part of the old gubernia. Most of what was the Volhynia Gubernia is now in Ukraine, with a small part of northern Volhynia in Belarus. Its capital was Zhitomir. Today, Volhynia isn't a Volga German area but is part of the Ukraine, Poland, and Belarus now. The Germans who settled made up a minority. Ethnic Germans in these areas were then expelled from these areas by 1945. Volhynia was annexed to Soviet Ukraine after the end of World War II. Most of the remaining ethnic Polish population were expelled to Poland in 1945. For further clarification on the history of Volhynia, this is a great article History of Germans in Volhynia and Kiev The alternate name for the region is Lodomeria. ==Maps and History== German-Russian Settlement Map About 80,000 Germans settled in the Black Sea area between 1804 and 1850. Another 30,000 Germans immigrated to the Ukraine Black Sea region between 1830 to 1865. Over 150,000 emigrated to Volhynia between 1865 to 1875. By 1897, 1.8 million ethnic Germans were living in the Russian Empire. Volhynia Map The migration of Germans into Volhynia occurred under significantly different conditions than those going to other parts of Russia. Their migration began at the encouragement of local noblemen, often Polish landlords, who wanted to develop their significant land holdings in the area. Probably 75% or more of them originated from Russian Poland with the balance coming directly from other regions such as East and West Prussia, Pomerania, Posen, Württemberg, and Galicia among others. Although the noblemen themselves offered certain perks for the move, the Germans of Volhynia received none of the special tax and military service freedoms attributed to the Germans in other areas. The settlement started as a trickle shortly after 1800. A surge occurred after the first Polish rebellion of 1831 but by 1850, they were still only about 5000 in number. The largest migration came after the second Polish rebellion of 1863 when they began to flood into the area by the thousands until they reached their peak at about 200,000 in the year 1900. The vast majority of these Germans were of the Lutheran (Evangelical) faith. Limited numbers of Mennonites from the lower Vistula River region settled in the south part of Volhynia while Baptists and Moravian Brethern also arrived, mostly settling northwest of Zhitomir. Another major difference between the Germans here and in other parts of Russia is that the other Germans tended to settle in larger communities. The Germans in Volhynia were scattered about in over 1400 villages. Though the population peaked in 1900, many Germans had already begun leaving Volhynia in the late 1880s for North America. Between 1911 and 1915, a small group of Volhynian German farmers (36 families - more than 200 people) chose instead to move to Eastern Siberia, making use of the resettlement subsidies of the Stolypin reform. They settled in three villages (Pikhtinsk, Sredne-Pikhtinsk, and Dagnik) in what is today Zalari District of Irkutsk Oblast. Their descendants, still bearing German names, continue to live in the district. ==Resources== === Resources for Volhynia Research === *SGGEE.org: The Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe - focuses on the genealogy of Germans from Russian Poland and Volhynia * Germans from Russia Settlement Locations and Current Name(s), * Some names of settlers in Volhynia: http://wolhynien.de/db/gr/namelist.php *The most important English-language resource on the Germans from Volhynia and Russian Poland is the Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe site. Its capital and largest city is Olsztyn. The Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship has the largest number of ethnic Ukrainians living in Poland due to forced relocations (such as Operation Vistula) carried out by the Soviet and Polish Communist authorities. ==Historical Categories == Finding places in modern Poland, or some other countries, that were once part of Germany can be difficult. == Historical Timeline == *1525 = The state of the Teutonic Order ceased to exist in 1525 when Grandmaster Albert Hohenzollern introduced secularisation, proclaimed the Duchy of Prussia and became a vassal of Sigismund I of Poland. *1618 = The Prussian line of Hohenzollern was extinct by 1618 with the death of Albert Frederick and the Duchy was inherited by the Brandenburgian line; Prussia simultaneously entered a personal union with the electorate of Brandenburg known as Brandenburg-Prussia, remaining under Polish suzerainty until the Treaty of Oliva in 1660. *1660 = Treaty of Olivia. The throne was inherited by Frederick I of Prussia who wanted to unite the Duchy with Brandenburg and also wanted to proclaim himself king of Prussia and therefore participated in the Russian-initiated Partitions of Poland in which Warmia was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia, and henceforth became part of the newly established province of East Prussia until 1945. *1772 - 1945 = Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth partition. Together with the rest of the Kingdom, the region became part of the North German Confederation, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic, and Nazi Germany. Warmia was part of Lutheran East Prussia, with the exception that the people of Warmia remained largely Catholic. * 1914 = In 1914, the province turned into a battlefield, seeing notable battles such as the Battle of Tannenberg as part of the Eastern Front of World War I. *1939 - 1945 = Nazi Germany Occupation.
