This page describes the various theories about the parents of John Alden who came to America on the Mayflower in 1620. None of these theories have been proven, and John Alden's actual parents are currently unknown. Alycia Crane Williams analyzed the most popular of these theories in a series of articles for The Mayflower Descendant.Alicia Crane Williams, "John Alden: Theories on English Ancestry," The Mayflower Descendant 39: 111-22 (1989), 40: 133-26 (1990), 41: 201 (1991). Available on americanancestors.org with a paid subscription here. When adding a theory, please add a citation to indicate where the theory came from and, if you can, cite and link to any primary sources related to it. ===What we know=== The only thing that is known for sure about John Alden's origins is that he was hired at the port of Southampton, England as a cooper (barrel-maker), when the Mayflower was stopped at the port in 1620.William Bradford, Of Plimoth Plantation, digital images of handwritten manuscript, State Library of Massachusetts (http://archives.lib.state.ma.us/2452/208249 : accessed 9 April 2019), digital page 531; original held at State Library of Massachusetts. His presence in Southampton at the time does not mean he was from Southampton or born there, just that he was working there at that time. His age at death, and self-reported age in a court record indicates that he was born around 1598. Two patrilineal (direct paternal) descendants of John Alden have taken the FTDNA Big Y-700 tes. Their results document where Alden belonged to Y-DNA haplogroup R-P312>>U152>L2>DF103>FGC8158>FT21550>Y48952>FTC62332."Mayflower DNA Project - Y-DNA Colorized Chart", FamilyTreeDNA,( : accessed 19 Jan 2023) ===John Alden and Elizabeth Daye of Harwich=== William Russell mentioned in his 1587 will a grandson named John Alden, son of John Alden, who at the time the will was written, a captive in Spain. This family was related by marriage to Captain Jones of the Mayflower. Alicia Crane Williams covers this theory in depth in The Mayflower Descendant.Esther Littleford Woodworth-Barnes, comp., and Alicia Crane Williams, ed. Mayflower Families through Five Generations. Vol. 16, part 1 of 3. General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1999, pages 1-22: John Alden and Priscilla Mullins. Quoting the pertinent portion of William Russell's 1587 will: :And whereas John Alden my sonne in Lawe bought halfe a quarter of Robert my sonne - I will he shall have the other halfe quarter yf it please god to deliver him home oute of Spayne - and if the said John Alden be not delivered oute of Spayne out of Captivitye as yet, I hope in god by his providence he shall Then I will the said halfe quarter shall remaine unto John Alden his oldest sone my godsonne And that he shall paye to his sister Josyan within one wholle yeare after five pounds Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858 for William Russell, PROB 11: Will Registers, 1567-1598, Piece 70: Spencer, Quire Numbers 1-40 (1587). Horrocks, editor, The Assembly Books of Southampton, Volume 1 (Southampton: Cox and Sharland, 1917), digitized copy, Google Books ( : accessed 9 Sep 2019), page 17. and Court Leet Books of Southampton from 1587 to 1620 in the parish of All Saints. A widowed Jane Alden appears in the city subsidy tax list for 1628 after George Alden disappears from the records.Charles Banks, The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers, (1929), page 27. Available free at the Internet Archive here. Charles Edward Banks, in his book, the English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers, 1929, puts forward a theory that John is the son of George Alden and Jane— and grandson of Richard and Avys (Aoys) Alden of Southampton, England. Since Bradford says John Alden was hired in Southampton, this would be a logical place to start looking for Alden's. No other supporting evidence has been found, and it has been noted by many researchers that the names George, Richard, and Avys do not occur anywhere in John Alden's family. Naming children after parents and grandparents was an extremely common practice in the seventeenth century, and the absence of such a name is nearly enough evidence to disprove this theory. Jane Fowke has been suggested in unsourced online trees as the wife of George Alden. ===Thomas Alden and Isabell of Windsor, Berkshire=== John Aulden baptized 6 June 1602 (no parents listed) in the Windsor, Berkshire parish records. Thomas Alden, in his will dated 8 March 1610/11, lists a son under 21 named John Alden. Wife Isabell also mentioned in the will."England & Wales, Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858," Ancestry (5111 : accessed 7 Sep 2019), Thomas Alden; citing The National Archives; Kew, England; Prerogative Court of Canterbury and Related Probate Jurisdictions: Will Registers; Class: PROB 11; Piece: 117. An uncle of Thomas Alden, Mardocheus Alden, mentions Rachell Alden in his will (will dated 13 Sep 1615), who is also listed as a daughter of Thomas Alden in the 1610/11 will, but Mardocheus does not mention John Alden in his will. Proponents of this theory suggest that John Alden may have been estranged from the family, which is why he sailed for America. This Thomas Alden may have been a beer brewer, an occupation which would go along well with John Alden's known occupation of barrel-making.Harry Hollingsworth, "John Alden-Beer Brewer of Windsor?" The American Genealogist, 53:235-240. Available with paid subscription at americanancestors.org here. ===John Alden of Hackney, London=== A John Alden, son of John Alden, was christened in Hackney, London, 11 July 1600."England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch ( : 11 February 2018, John Alden, 11 Jul 1600); citing , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 569,924. This is currently the first record to show up when running a search on FamilySearch for a John Alden born around 1600 in England. Alycia Crane Williams points out that another John Aulden, son of John Aulden, was christened 5 Sep 1607, at the same church in Hackney, London. This suggests the John Alden christened in 1600 may have passed away and another son was named for him. The 1607 John is likely too young to be the Mayflower Alden."England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975," database, FamilySearch ( : 11 February 2018, John Aulden, 05 Sep 1607); citing , index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 569,924. ===John Alden of the Middle Temple (Coat of Arms)=== A John Alden of the Middle Temple was awarded a Patent of Arms on 8 Sep 1607. He was married to a Maria Fowks and had a son, John Alden, born 14 March 1611. Many have associated his patent of arms with the Mayflower John Alden, but there is no evidence they are related. Viola Main Turner, editor, Alden genealogy (1935 : The Alden Kindred of New York City and Vicinity); digitized book, Hathitrust (https://hdl.handle.net/2027/wu.89062953088 : accessed 9 Sep 2019), p. 1 Middle Temple John Alden was a lawyer by profession, the son of John Alden, gentleman who was living in Swanscomb, Kent, near London in 1598. John Alden (abt. 1535 - bef. 1609) was a grocer in London as well as a shipping merchant between Antwerp and London. He likely was retired by 1598 and was living the life of a gentleman in Swanscomb, Kent, near London. His Flemish-born wife, Jonkvrouw Barbara du Prieur and two daughters Susan and Sarah were naturalized in England in 1576.William Page, ed., Huguenot Society of London, Letters of Denization and Acts of Naturalization for Aliens in England, 1509-1603, The Publications of the Huguenot Society of London, Volume 8, Lymington: The Huguenot Society of London, 1893, p. 3, Parl. This John Alden family may be related to the Alden family of Harwich. Both families were involved in shipping in the late 16th century and had the tradition of naming sons "John". Additionally, Captain Christopher Jones Sr. (?-1578), father of Captain Christopher Jones of the Mayflower, left to his son an interest in the ship Marie Fortune in 1578. Catherine Charles and Henry Pyne lived in Gravesend, England from c. 1577 after which Pyne was appointed to the position of Searcher of Customs at Gravesend around 1580. In 1589 Henry Pyne entered into partnership with Sir Walter Raleigh in Ireland and exported timber from Raleigh's estates in southeastern, Ireland. Irish white oak from the estate was used to fashion staves for wine barrels which were exported to the Canary Islands. Henry Pyne in 1592 obtained the lease of timbered lands at Mogeely, County Cork, set up a sawmill, brought in workers, and manufactured barrel staves.Niall C.E.J O'Brien, Sheanmore Castle and Manor: a brief history, Medieval News, 12 April 2021 (online). Also mentioned in "The Huguenots of Old Boston," Proceedings of the Huguenot Society of America, 1899: :"The Alden genealogies ... mention a certain Mr. Alden of St. John's College, who is referred to as 'one who suffered by the tyrannical Bartholomew act' --which statement suggests that it was a French Refugee of 1572 who is the ancestor of the family.'" It is possible that none of these theories are correct. It is possible that information on John Alden and his parents was never recorded, or that anything that was recorded has since been destroyed. ===Sources===

The inscription tells the story:
"This monument marks the first burying ground in Plymouth of the Passengers of the Mayflower. Here under cover of darkness the Fast dwindling company laid their dead, leveling the earth above them lest the Indians should learn how many were the graves." ===The First Sickness 1620 to 1621=== One hundred two passengers sailed on the Mayflower. One died at sea and one was born, leaving the same number to land as sailed, but during the first year half the company died leaving just 52 persons to begin Plymouth Colony. Governor William Bradford in his journal refers to these deaths as during the first mortality, first sickness, first infection, and general sickness. His words tell of this sorrowful time and the compassionate care given by members of the company.Bradford, William. History of Plymouth Plantation (Massachusetts Historical Society, 1856) :"But that which was most sadd & lamentable was, that in 2. or 3. moneths time halfe of their company dyed, espetialy in Jan: & February, being ye depth of winter, and wanting houses & other comforts ; being infected with ye scurvie & other diseases, which this long vioage & their inacomodate condition had brought upon them ; so as ther dyed some times 2. or 3. of a day, in ye foresaid time ; that of 100. & odd persons, scarce 50. remained. And of these in ye time of most distres, ther was but 6. or 7. sound persons, who, to their great comendations be it spoken, spared no pains, night nor day, but with abundance of toyle and hazard of their owne health, fetched them woode, made them fires, drest them meat, made their beads, washed their lothsome cloaths, cloathed & uncloathed them ; in a word, did all ye homly & necessarie offices for them wch dainty & quesie stomacks cannot en dure to hear named ; and all this willingly & cherfully, without any grudging in ye least, shewing herein their true love unto their freinds & bretheren. A rare example & worthy to be remembred. Tow of these 7. were Mr. William Brewster, ther reverend Elder, & Myles Standish, ther Captein & military comander, unto whom my selfe, & many others, were much beholden in our low & sicke condition. And yet the Lord so upheld these persons, as in this generall calamity they were not at all infected either with sicknes, or lamnes. And what I have said of these, I may say of many others who dyed in this generall vissitation, & others yet living, that whilst they had health, yea, or any strength continuing, they were not wanting to any that had need of them. And I doute not but their recompence is with ye Lord." Six people died in December, eight in January, 17 in February and 13 in March for a total of forty-four. Another six died before the Fortune arrived in November of 1621.Prince, Thomas. The "Mayflower Compact" was signed on 11 November 1620 while the Mayflower lay at anchor in what is now Provincetown Harbor. The Pilgrims had permission from the English authorities to settle in "Virginia." They planned to settle near the mouth of the Hudson River. They decided instead to stay outside the bounds of the Virginia Company because of the hazards which occurred when they tried to travel south. The Mayflower Compact set out a legal form of self-government until they could get formal permission from the Council of New England, which would be granted in the form of the Pierce Patent of 1621. The original Mayflower Compact has been lost, but several copies were made and lists of signers were published before its loss. This one is from Governor William Bradford's history Of Plymouth Plantation. Spelling and punctuation have not been modernized, although modern lettering has been used. ---- In yͤ name of God, Amen. I've noticed as I have looked over these profiles that there are many 4th generation profiles that should be included. Each profile of a person who had children should have a list of those children at the end, (with some identifying fact). One secondary source for the list is fine. Their profiles will have better sourcing. **Are the children attached the ones on the list? Do the facts agree? === Frequently Asked Questions FAQ === *Should I create profiles for children? If the children normally fall into the project, create them. Add Mayflower Family Member. Add the Project Account wikitree-mayflower-project@googlegroups.com as a manager. Add the category and the Checklist etc. If they do not fall in the category you don't need to create them but certainly can. *Spouses Profiles? Adding information to spouses (not in the project) is good but not necessary. *Acknowledgements Section. Wikitree Guidelines says we don't need them. Leave or remove doesn't matter. If you leave them they should be short, names only. == Sources == *Bradford's Original Manuscript. Bradford, William, 1590-1657. Of Plimoth Plantation: manuscript, 1630-1650. Often these sources are the best (or only) information we have to work with regarding an individual or a family group. Unfortunately, however, family genealogies range in quality from superb to horrifyingly bad. Some are even fraudulent. In evaluating the reliability of a particular genealogy, we should consider whether the author cited their sources, and consider whether those cited sources are reliable. In reviewing citations, consider the age of the work. A book published recently should be considered doubtful if it lacks good standard reference citations. However, because 19th-century authors typically did not use modern-style citations, we need instead to look for informal descriptions of where their information came from. Regardless of the citation formats, spot-check their information against those sources you are able to access, to see whether the primary sources validate the information found in the family genealogy. Check the credentials and reputation(s) of the author(s). Consider where and how the work was published. Do not treat the "official" work of a family association as having any special credibility or legal authority over a family's history -- their publications should be evaluated the same way that we would evaluate another author's work. Finally, don't hesitate to ask other WikiTreers (in G2G) for advice regarding the reliability of a particular work. ==== Societies (some have indexed databases)==== * Alden Kindred http://www.alden.org **searchable database (Currently off-line) http://alden.org/aldengenealogy/database/index.htm * Pilgrim Isaac Allerton Society http://www.isaacallerton.com * Billngton Family Society (No longer online) https://billingtonfamilysociety.com * Elder William Brewster Society http://brewsterfamily.org * Pilgrim Peter Brown Society http://www.pilgrimpeterbrownsociety.org * Pilgrim James Chilton Chilton Family Genealogy (no longer online) http://www.coltechpub.com/hartgen/htm/chilton.htm * Pilgrim Francis Cooke Society https://www.pilgrimfranciscookesociety.org ** Lineages of Society members https://www.pilgrimfranciscookesociety.org/lineages.php * Pilgrim Edward Doty Society http://www.edwarddoty.org ** searchable database http://www.edwarddoty.org/tng/surnames.php?tree=DOTY * Eaton Families Association http://www.eatongenealogy.com * The Fuller Society http://www.thefullersociety.org/index.html ** CDs are available for purchase from the Society Historian and are available for either Edward or Dr. Samuel descendant lineages. The cost of each CD is $15.00. Because there were very few recorded burials, and few surviving stones for pre-1700 persons, Find a grave memorials without stones or burial places should not even be added to Mayflower profiles. There are memorial stones, created by later generations, that have been added to find a grave. Linking to these to show the memorial stone is acceptable, but do not necessarily take the information provided, without verifying with a quality, reliable source, in which case the reliable source is a better citation than Find a grave. *Find a Grave Indexes - Don't use the indexes. Go to Find a Grave and cite that instead. *Wikipedia. Wikipedia articles can be problematic. Genealogical information in an otherwise well-researched article may not be supported by a source at all or the source may be one that WikiTree would consider unreliable. Some trees cite sources that can be used for your profiles when you have checked them out. Never use a user generated tree as source. *Unsourced or badly sourced gedcom imports. *Generic repositories: eg. familysearch.org or ancestry.com Why Ancestry and FamilySearch Aren’t Sources *FamilyTrees, Community Trees, Historical Trees such as those found on FamilySearch.org, Ancestry.com and others. Speedwell.jpg
The Speedwell was a standard 60-ton ship hired to travel alongside the Mayflower when the Pilgrims traveled from England to The New World. Built in 1577, the Speedwell was originally named Swiftsure. She was commissioned as part of the English fleet during the was against Spain. She served in several naval battles and, during the 1596 expedition to the Azores, she was the ship of Sir Gilly Merick, second in command to the Earl of Essex. She was decommissioned in 1605 when hostilities against Spain ended. After being rebuilt, she was renamed Speedwell. She was purchased by the Leiden Separatists in Holland, where it was boarded and set to sail to Southampton, England to meet with the Mayflower. On 5 August, 1620, the two ships set sail, but the Speedwell was forced to return to harbor in Dartmouth due to a leak. After repairs, the two ships set sail again. After traveling only 100 leagues beyond Land's End in Cornwall, the Speedwell again claimed to have sprung a leak. Exactly what happened to the Speedwell is not known. It is known that at least two passengers, Thomas Blossom and a son, returned to Leiden. It was later discovered that, in an attempt to escape their year-long contract, the crew of the Speedwell sabotaged the ship. Eleven passengers of the Speedwell boarded the Mayflower while the remaining 20 returned to London. Finally, without the Speedwell, the Mayflower and her 103 passengers left for The New World alone. A replacement for the Speedwell, The Fortune, eventually made landfall at Plymouth Colony one year after the Mayflower left. One of the original passengers, Philippe DeLannoy, made the journey aboard The Fortune. In 1656 the Speedwell made a transatlantic voyage at last, traveling from England to Boston with a party of Quakers. After arriving in Massachusetts Bay Colony, the passengers were deported for religious reasons and forced to return to Britain. Two ships after the Speedwell bore the same name. One was a Royal Navy ship of the line during the Napoleonic Wars, the other was a modern nuclear submarine.

The John and Priscilla Alden Family Sites are two properties in Duxbury, Massachusetts that have been designated National Historic Landmarks. The two sites are the circa 1700 Alden House and the original 1632 Alden Homestead. The Alden House is located at 105 Alden Street in Duxbury, Massachusetts and was became listed with the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This is the house that John Alden moved to after his first homestead. It is believed to have been built in 1653 and may be built from materials derived from Alden's original home. The other site, the Alden Homestead site, was the location of a significant amount of archaeological work by Roland Wells Robbins. The original home was excavated in 1960 and much nationally pertinent data was found that shed light on the lives of the first English settlers. The Alden Kindred of America, Inc. is a non-profit organization that owns and preserves the John Alden House.

Pilgrims-Leaving-Delft.jpg
Mayflower.jpg
A band of English Calvinists fled when persecuted in their homeland. In 1609, after a brief stay in Amsterdam, about 100 of them settled in Leiden. A decade or so later, as Leiden’s political and economic climate changed, the refugees moved again. They boarded a ship called the Mayflower, sailed across the Atlantic; and in 1620, put down roots in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. Today we call them the Pilgrims. Read more at The Mayflower was a now famous ship that carried the Pilgrims, English separatists looking for freedom from religious prosecution, from Southampton, England to Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. The ship departed England on September 6 and would sail for 66 days. The journey was hampered by disease, which would claim two lives, before dropping anchor inside the hooked tip of Cape Cod on November 11. The ship was originally set to make landfall at the mouth of the Hudson River, but had sailed off course as winter approached. The passengers all went ashore on March 21. The Mayflower, a privately commissioned vessel, left for a return trip to England on April 5. The Mayflower was likely dismantled for scrap lumber after the death of her captain, Christopher Jones, in 1622. History of the ship The Mayflower served as a cargo ship in Europe. From 1609 to 1622 the ship was captained by Christopher Jones, who would lead the ship on its famous journey to the New World. While the exact size of The Mayflower is unknown, it is believed it was a standard 180-ton merchant ship. It would have been between 90 and 110 feet with a width of about 25 feet. A typical crew would have been roughly 25 or 30 men. The voyage to the New World The original plans for the voyage were to include two ships. The Mayflower as well as the Speedwell, a ship which had been previously hired to transport Pilgrims from Delfshaven in the Netherlands to the final departure point, Southampton. However, the Speedwell developed a leak and had to dock at Dartmouth to be refitted on August 17. With the leak repaired, the two ships departed with their Pilgrims on board. However, the leak would again spring on the Speedwell, forcing the ships to return to dock. It was later revealed that there had not been a leak on the Speedwell. It was believed by the Pilgrims on board that the disaster was fabricated by the crew of the Speedwell so they could escape their contract. The Pilgrims reorganized their plan and finally made their departure on the Mayflower alone on September 6. The ship was crammed full and space was limited and confined. While the original destination, near what is present-day New York city, was the mouth of the Hudson River, the Mayflower was blown off-course by the onset of winter weather. The settlers intended to travel to their Virginia destination where they had received permission from the London Company to settle. But due to their setback, their untimely landing occurred in the middle of the harsh New England winter. The settlers were experiencing strife and disenchantment within their ranks. In order to quell a potential uprising, they all wrote and signed the Mayflower Compact on November 11. Upon their arrival, the winter snows had already settled in. The settlers discovered what they believed was an empty Native American village. Assuming the natives gone, they dug up many areas of the village. They discovered stores of food alongside burial mounds. The settlers stole the food and looted the graves, infuriating the Native Americans. The settlers continued down the coast and explored the Cape Cod area. They continued to raid the empty villages and desecrate the graves as they went. They had difficult confrontation with the angry Native Americans in December 1620 on the later aptly-named First Encounter Beach. The passengers remained on board the Mayflower during the winter. There was an outbreak of a severe disease that, when all was said and done, left only 53 of the original 100 surviving passengers alive. In the spring, the passengers built houses on shore and on March 21, 1621, the surviving passengers all departed the Mayflower. The Mayflower left the New World for England on April 5 and arrived back on on May 6. There were 102 passengers on the Mayflower: 74 men and 28 women.
