== Biography ==Reuben Martin was the second child born of Job Martin and Sybol Paser in Arlington, Vermont. He married Sarah / Sally Ager in Arlington, VT. They moved to Unadilla, Otsego County, N.Y. before the 1830 census where they raised their children. Reuben died in Unadilla of consumption in August 1859 after suffering 5 months. He was 61 years old. His wife would live with different family members until her death in 1889. He is buried in Saint Mathews Cemetery Unadilla,Otsego County, N.Y. |

== Biography ==Lydia was born in Unadilla, Otsego County, N.Y. She was the daughter of Rueben Martin and Sarah [Sally] Martin who were born in Vermont. She married George Washington Nichols in Unadilla in 1844. They had a large family starting in Unadilla and then they were in Chautauqua County, N.Y. By 1870 they were in Wisconsin. They moved back east to Foster , McKean County, PA by 1880 and then purchased land in Roulette, Potter County, PA. There husband George and son Henry built a log cabin home where they were living when Lydia died in 1891. Their children were scattered in several locations as they married and started their own families in Wisconsin , Pennsylvania and New York State. Lydia is buried in the John Lyman Cemetery in Roulette, Potter County, PA. with her husband George who died in 1899. Their son Henry and his wife Aleta are also buried there. The Nichols homestead was about 1 mile off State Route 6 in Roulette. Husband George and son Henry built a frame house near the log home where son Henry and wife Aleta would live and start their family. Henry remained on the homestead after his parents deaths and lived there until he passed in 1934. After husband George passed the log cabin was used by Henry as a tool and equipment shed. |

== Biography ==George Washington Nichols was believed to have been born in Myersburg PA. in 1824 per research done by Anita Van Zile Pererson. There are other claims for his birth such as New York State and Wainsburg, PA. none of which can be substantiated. Some have his parents as John Nichols and M. Potter. More recently I and others have found reason to discount this. The article mentioning George W. Nichols as their son I have seen. That John Nichols was listed as from Connecticut. His son was George William Nichols married to Elizabeth Hemingway. I am inclined to believe his father was Tyrus [Ty] Nichols. He is buried in Saint Mathews Cemetery Unadilla as is his wife and Lydia Martin's father. Tyrus was in Rose, Wayne County, N.Y. in the 1830 census. Also an Ezra Nichols who was likely the father of Tyrus Nichols was there. Ezra could have be George's father or grandfather? There were others in Unadilla that were considered such as Willis Nichols listed in 1830 census and Zigllis? Nichols in 1840 which are likely the same person. A memoir by a doctor who started out on Unadilla mentioned the Ty Nichols family situation and describes a visit to their log home. This description matches an oral history for George Washington's family home of a log cabin with a dirt floor. He married Lydia Martin daughter of Rueben Martin in the mid 1840's. They were living next to the Rueben Martin family in 1850 census in Unadilla. We have a letter from son Henry Nichols written in about 1903 to his uncle Wesley Martin. Wesley was a boy living his parents home in that 1850 census. Henry and Aleta name their first son Wesley. About the time of the passing of George's parents and Rueben Martin the family moved west into Chautauqua County. There was a mention of George being in a unit in southern PA. during the Civil War? I have not seen anything of this recently. They next appeared in Wisconsin by 1870. Eventually George and Lydia moved back east to Pennsylvania and appear in Foster, McKean County, PA. in the 1880 census with son Henry Nichols and daughter Hennrietta Nichols McClure and her 1 year old Mary McClure. George would purchase land in Roulette, Potter County, PA. and build a log home there. That was the start of the Nichols Homestead. Lyudia passed in 1891 and son Henry married Aleta Goodwin and they lived with George in the log home. Henry and George then built a frame home near the log home and Henry and Aleta moved in and started their family. George would die in 1899 of cancer. He and Lydia are buried in the John Lyman Cemetery, Roulette, Potter county, PA. as is his son Henry and wife Aleta. George and Lydia raised a large family which started in Unadilla, OItsego County, N.Y. and continued westward through New York and on to Wisconsin. Henry the youngest surviving child was born in 1871 in Wisconsin. Lydia had other babies what did not survive. Their oldest children were getting married and many stayed in Wisconsin when George and Lydia moved to Pennsylvania. Georges parents are listed as born in N.Y. in census records. |

== Biography == Sarah was often listed as Sally Martin in census records and other documents. She was born in Vermont where she and Reuben Martin were likely married. They moved to Unadilla, Otsego County, N.Y. where they first appear in the 1830 census. It is believed their children were born in Unadilla. Husband Reuben Martin passed in August 1859 from consumption. After that she lived with her son and his family for many years. She passed while living with her grand-daughter's family Mrs James Tripp in Cohocton, Steuben County, N.Y.on Monday morning November 25, 1889. An obituary said Mrs Fanny Marten died at the home of her grand-daughter. She was survived by 3 sons and 2 daughters and her husband Reuben had died 30 years earlier. She was interred in Lakeside Cemetery , Wayland, Steuben County, N.Y. as are 2 of her sons and perhaps other family members. I have not seen her listed as Fanny in any other records? She had a daughter Fanny. |

== Biography == Henry was the youngest child of George Washington and Lydia Martin Nichols. He was born in Herman Wisconsin in 1871. His parents were from Unadilla, New York where they were married and started their family in the late 1840's. After George's parents and Lydia's father passed they moved westward across New York and eventually ended in Wisconsin. Henry's older siblings were married or getting married by the time he was born and most stayed in Wisconsin. His parents moved back east with him and his next youngest sister. They purchased land in Roulette, Potter County, PA. about 1 mile off the main road. Here George and Henry built a log home likely similar to what George had lived in in Unadilla with his parents. Henry married Aleta Goodwin July 3, 1894 and they moved in with Henry's parents log home. Soon George and Henry started building a frame house near the parent's log home where Henry and Aleta would live and raise their family. Henry's mom Lydia had passed. Henry's dad George Washington passed from cancer in 1899 after the birth of Henry and Aleta's daughter Helen and son Wesley. I was told some of this by Henry's youngest son Howard Nichols who was only 14 when his dad passed in 1934. Henry had been struggling with stomach problems for some years. After all the children were grown and left the homestead Aleta started living with her married children and the old home sat empty. It never had electricity run to it. Howard told us about life on the homestead. They had chickens cows and other animals. They traded eggs at a local store for other goods. In a letter to his uncle Wesley Martin about 1903 he described his farm and young family. He mentioned planting fruit / apple trees and was very proud of his farm and family. Howard said his father Henry used the old log home as a tool shed after his father passed. I had believed that Lydia passed after Henry and Aleta were married. If the death date for her on Find a Grave is correct than she passed before they were married. Howard said he was back visiting the farm after it had been vacant and found a picture of George Washington Nichols his grandfather hanging in the log cabin / shed where his father had kept tools and equipment. That is how the picture that is on other sites came to be. He shared it with with Anita Van Zile Peterson I believe first. She was the one who started asking him about the Nichols and working on the Nichols line. He later gave copies of the picture to my mom , his niece, and I. There is some differences of opinion on George Washington's parents and ancestors. There is also disagreement on Lydia's parents and ancestors on different sites between different researchers such as myself. |
