Parker-15857 H |
After spending at least 20 years in Claiborne Co., Tenn., Barney and Louisa moved further west to Campbell Co., Tenn. where, in 1915, Barney took a job as superintendent of the Free Soil Farm in Caryville. They lived there about 14 years. The farm consisted of around 1200 acres of grazing and agricultural lands. Barney and Louisa lived in the big house and there were several smaller houses on the property for other families including many of their children. A few clues as to the location of the Farm are contained in a 1900 newspaper article<ref>https://www.pruiett-parker.com/parker/documents/TheFreeSoilFarm.jpg</ref> which indicates it was near the town of Caryville, thru which passes the greater Southern trunk line Railroad and that 600 of the 1200 acres lies in the beautiful valley at the base of the rugged Cumberland Mountains that picturesquely stands in the background. Based on this article, we were able to find the 1910 deed of sale (Harry S. Rothschild to James G. Sterchi and J. L. Deaver) in Tennessee archives.<ref>https://www.pruiett-parker.com/parker/documents/FreeSoilFarmSale1910Pg1and2opt1200.jpg</ref><ref>https://www.pruiett-parker.com/parker/documents/FreeSoilFarmSale1910Pg3and4opt1200.jpg</ref> That led us to the 1882 deed of sale (Wilhelm and Marie Boeing to Sigmond Rothschild)<ref>https://www.pruiett-parker.com/parker/documents/FreeSoilFarmSale1882Pg1and2opt1200.jpg</ref><ref>https://www.pruiett-parker.com/parker/documents/FreeSoilFarmSale1882Pg3opt1200.jpg</ref> along with an 1882 plat<ref>https://www.pruiett-parker.com/parker/documents/FreeSoilFarmPlat1882Opt1400.jpg</ref> associated with both the 1882 and 1910 deeds. Based on the plat and deed descriptions, we are confident that the Free Soil Farm encompassed a great deal of the land west, north and east of the old Caryville Depot and Hotel. Here's an outline of the extent of the farm on an 1885 map<ref>https://www.pruiett-parker.com/parker/documents/FreeSoilFarmCaryville1885opt719.jpg</ref> and a 2020 map.<ref>https://www.pruiett-parker.com/parker/documents/FreeSoilFarmCaryville2020opt719.jpg</ref> The main Residence of the farm, described in the deeds as Carey mansion, was located within the bounds of the cleared land northeast of Caryville. In addition, the plat shows an Old House just to the west of the Residence with a cemetery near it. That appears to be the present-day Carey Cemetery<ref>https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/10168/carey-cemetery</ref> just off Bruce Gap Road where William Carey, Thomas Wheeler and many family members are buried. | Barnett Josiah Parker | certain 5 Apr 1859 Guilford, North Carolina, United States | certain 13 Sep 1942 certain Caryville, Campbell, Tennessee, United States | Male | Pruiett-26 |

In Greene County, Tennessee, Interstate 81, take Exit # 15, Fish Hatchery Road (also Hwy 340). Take Hwy. 340 south to the village of Warrensburg (about 6-8 miles). At the crossroads in Warrensburg, turn right on Warrensburg Road and go approximately 2-3 miles. Look for a two story brick house on the right, set back from the road with lots of farm equipment in front of it and a large silo. Turn into the driveway and Maloney Cemetery will be to the left of the house. The cemetery is overgrown and fenced which makes it almost impossible to photograph the stones. Rimel-72 H |
Regarding where Isaac may be buried: In his probate records was a receipt for his tombstone, to be delivered to Overton. Was that where the undertaker was? Was that where Abe (who paid for it) was living? Clayton Cemetery is at Overton and his daughter Kesiah Koontz is buried there. In the records of Copps Chapel Cemetery, Moniteau County, there is a typed list (with no indication as to when it was created nor who created it), Isaac N. Rimel Apr, 11, 1800 - Feb 2, 1884 and Kesiah Rimel, 1789-1871 are listed with the comment that they are buried at Old Cemetery at Pleasant Green Methodist Church. They are not in the list for that cemetery that is posted to the Cooper County MoGen site, but that seems an odd place for them since they did not live in the Pleasant Green area. Is it really meant to be Pleasant Grove? There are a couple of Rimel's listed as being buried there, which I think are a daughter-in-law and grandson of Isaac and Kesiah. (Link to the Pleasant Grove cemetery on FindAGrave. https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2591605/camp-ground-at-pleasant-grove-cemetery). | Isaac Newton Rimel | certain 1 Apr 1800 Greene County, Tennessee, United States | certain 14 Jun 1871 Moniteau County, Missouri, United States | Male | Newton-6439 Broyles-285 |
