Meszaros-123 H |
János and his brothers were among large contingents of Hungarians who were attracted, even recruited, to live and work in various small coal mining villages in the vicinity of Perryopolis in northern Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Several of those mining towns were along the nearby Youghiogheny River, among them Van Meter,<ref>Van Meter was the site of the [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darr_Mine_disaster Darr Mine disaster] in 1907. It's fortunate that when János returned in 1905 he and his relatives were not headed for Van Meter. Jacobs Creek forms the eastern part of the border between Fayette and Westmoreland counties. Van Meter is near the creek's confluence with the river. Among Hungarians in the old country as well as in the United States the 1907 disaster was commonly known as Jacobs Creek.
