*3) It has been mistakenly alleged that James married a Mary Alexander (Williams), but that is the exact name of the spouse of a grandson also named James Paine. A 6 January 1799 Person County North Carolina marriage bond exists showing James Paine and Polly Williams. This was about 16 years after Dr. James Paine's death. Also, Mary (Williams) Paine's gravestone, as pictured on findagrave.com, disproves the allegation. (see Williams-82552 for sources). |
