Topanemus (Toponemus, etc.) was what the Lenape Indians called a large part of western Monmouth County, <ref>Sometimes the name Topanemus was used to refer specifically to a settlement at Free Hill, south of Wickatunk, in Marlboro Township. Only the Old Scots Burial Ground is left. See https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/100156/old-scots-cemetery? For a good modern summary of events, see the National Register of Historic Places Registration Form for Old Scots Burying Ground on Gordon's Corner Road in Marlboro Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey, in Section 8, at https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/NRHP/01000841_text </ref> stretching at least from modern Gordon's Corner down to Lake Topanemus at Freehold Borough. The workers constructing New Perth needed to be fed, so the Proprietors set up some of their indentured servants on farmland south of the Raritan River, and told them to pay for their rent with farm produce. The John Oliphant family appears to have been among these tenant farm families, and they were possibly settled in the far south of the Topanemus region, within easy walking distance of Wemcoke Neck (Wemcake, Weamcake, Weamacock, Weamaconk, etc.).
