Known as “Robert the Scotsman,” he settled in Maryland before 1690, acquiring a 460 acre tract in Montgomery County he called '''Resurvey on Exeter.''' Topanemus (Toponemus, etc.) was what the Lenape Indians called a large part of western Monmouth County, <ref>Sometimes the name Topanemus was used to refer specifically to a settlement at Free Hill, south of Wickatunk, in Marlboro Township. Only the Old Scots Burial Ground is left. See https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/100156/old-scots-cemetery? For a good modern summary of events, see the National Register of Historic Places Registration Form for Old Scots Burying Ground on Gordon's Corner Road in Marlboro Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey, in Section 8, at https://npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/GetAsset/NRHP/01000841_text </ref> stretching at least from modern Gordon's Corner down to Lake Topanemus at Freehold Borough. The workers constructing New Perth needed to be fed, so the Proprietors set up some of their indentured servants on farmland south of the Raritan River, and told them to pay for their rent with farm produce. The John Oliphant family appears to have been among these tenant farm families, and they were possibly settled in the far south of the Topanemus region, within easy walking distance of Wemcoke Neck (Wemcake, Weamcake, Weamacock, Weamaconk, etc.). *Old Scots Burial Ground, in Find A Grave. *1934 Oct 20 obituary, Perthshire Advertiser (newspaper), Perth, Tayside. Alyth. Sudden Death, Mr. Alex. K. Guthrie, St. Ann, Muthill Road, passed away suddenly on Wednesday. Recently he underwent an operation for throat trouble, but was able to go about, and attended Alyth Nursing Home for dressing. On Wednesday he suddenly collapsed when rising and did not regain consciousness. Mr. Guthrie was a well-known person in Alyth, being for many years chief clerk with Messrs Japp & Yeaman, bankers and solicitors. For a considerable period, he was associated with Mr. John Reid, late town clerk, but owing to the condition of his health he retired. Mr. Guthrie will be much missed by his sister, Miss Annie Guthrie, with whom he resided. The funeral takes place today (Saturday) to Alyth Cemetery. https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2423363/alyth-cemetery | Alexander Kidd Guthrie | 2 Jun 1857 Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom | 17 Oct 1934 Alyth, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom | Male | Kidd-2739 |
