== Argentina Naming Conventions == Here is a short guide on how Argentine names should be placed on WikiTree. However, for a comprehensive background briefing on Argentine names, one may look at Wikipedia and also at this free-space page dedicated to Naming Conventions. Remember, "We should use their conventions instead of ours." ===Proper First and Middle Name=== Most Argentine people have two names but many treat them as one composite name. Thus for them the right thing to do on Wikitree would be to put BOTH of these names into the “Proper First Name” box. The Middle Name field should not be used unless the person migrated and changed their name to conform to the new countries naming conventions. Check the radio button under that field 'no middle name.' === Last Name At Birth === Due to the large number of people of Spanish descent, many Argentinians still use the surnames of both parents. The surnames can be one from the father and one from the mother, so can include the first surname of both. Thus: * the first part is their father’s first surname (which likely will be his father’s) * the second part is their mother’s first surname (which likely will be her father’s) For the Last Name At Birth (LNAB), please use the first surname from the father, and then the first surname from the mother. Please leave the 'de' or 'y' from the Last Name At Birth field as it can cause search errors, creating duplicate profiles. Example: Camila Sofia Rodrigues García {| |Proper First Name:||Camila Sofia |- |Preferred First Name:||Camila |- |Middle Name:||(No middle name) |- |Last Name at Birth:||Rodrigues García |- |Other Last Names:||Rodrigues |- |Current Last Name:||Rodrigues de López |- |Her father’s name was :||António Rodrigues Fernández |- |Her mother’s name was :||Maria Rosa García González |} Note that most women in Argentina do not take the surname of their spouse after marriage.Before full divorce law was sanctioned in 1985 (or close to it) ALL married women were named like "Juana Perez de Lopez", Perez being her maiden name, Lopez the husband's (if they were upper-class they could be 2 of each). She could even be referred as just "Juana P. de Lopez or Juana de Lopez". This was VERY common prior to 1980. In fact, many older women resisted to abandon the particle "de" because it was a social status marker, as opposed to unmarried women (specially unmarried mothers). So you will find a lot of obituaries and death records were women are named like this. Corbellani-1 There is a small number that did use it, adding a "de" before his surname. It is therefore suggested that, on WikiTree, that the father's first surname (family name) and then the mother's first surname should be put into the “Last Name at Birth” box. If you prefer to match the baptism record you can do so. Keep in mind that the "full" surname is their legal surname, despite what it says on the baptism record. If you do so, place the combination of the father's and mother's surname in the Other Last Names field. Sometimes Argentine surnames (family names) are connected by “y” (and), thus joining them and effectively making them one name. Argentine names are counted as one name even without the 'y.' Per Wikipedia "the words constitute a single logical unit." ===Current Last Name === A woman in Argentina rarely took her husband’s surname. It is therefore recommended that the husbands surname not be used unless records are found showing she took his name. In rare cases a woman did take her husband's surname(s), for example: * Julieta Maria Alonso Vásquez de Fernandez In practice, however, she may call herself one of the following: * Julieta Maria Alonso Vásquez de Fernandez * Julieta Alonso Vásquez * Julieta Alonso de Fernandez * Julieta Alonso Generally, women tend to keep using their maiden name: * Julieta Alonso An example of a Descendant tree: * Descendants of John Newbery == Sources == * "List of most common surnames in South America" as viewed on Wikipedia.org 30 August 2022. * "Naming Conventions Around the World" as viewed on ToppanDigital.com * "Naming customs of Hispanic America" as viewed on Wikipedia.org 30 August 2022. * "Spanish Naming Conventions" as viewed on tvtropes.org 30 August 2022. * "Top 100 Argentine names" as viewed on Students of the World.info 30 August 2022. * "What’s in a name? ==Bem-vindo à página da Seleção Brasileiros Alemães== Esta página foi criada como um auxílio de pesquisa para encontrar informações sobre os alemães que emigraram para o Brasil a partir do início da década de 1820. ===História=== :O seguinte foi copiado da Wikipedia: German Brazilians e deve ser reescrito eventualmente: -------------------------------------------------- ==Welcome to the German Brazilians Team Page== This page was created as a research aid to find information on those Germans who emigrated to Brazil from the early 1820s. ===History=== :The following was copied from Wikipedia: German Brazilians and should be re-written eventually: ::When German-speaking immigrants first arrived in Brazil starting at the beginning of the 19th century, they did not identify themselves so much as a unified German-Brazilian group. However, as time went on this common regional identity did emerge for many different geo-socio-political reasons. Germans immigrated mainly from what is now Germany, but also from other countries where German communities were established. From 1824 to 1969, around 250,000 Germans emigrated to Brazil, being the fourth largest immigrant community to settle in the country, after the Portuguese, Italians and Spaniards. About 30% of them arrived between World War I and World War II. ::The first German immigrants to settle in Brazil were 165 families who settled in Ilhéus, Bahia, in 1818. One year later, 200 families settled São Jorge, in the same state. Some Germans were brought to work in the Brazilian army after Independence from Portugal in 1822. ::However, the cradle of the German settlement in Brazil was São Leopoldo, in 1824. At that time Southern Brazil had a very low population density. Most of its inhabitants were concentrated on the coast and a few in the Pampas. The interior was covered by forests and sparsely populated by different groups of native Amerindians. The absence of a unified population in the interior was regarded as a problem by the Brazilian government because Southern Brazil could easily be invaded by neighboring countries. ::Since Brazil was recently independent from Portugal, it was not possible to bring Portuguese immigrants. Germany was suffering the effects of the wars against Napoleon, overpopulation and poverty in the countryside. Many Germans were willing to immigrate to Brazil. Furthermore, Brazil's Empress, Maria Leopoldina, was Austrian and encouraged the arrival of German immigrants. ::The first years were not easy. Many Germans died of tropical disease, while others left the colonies to find better living conditions. The German colony of São Leopoldo was in the early years a disaster. Nevertheless, in the following years, a further 4,830 Germans arrived at São Leopoldo, and then the colony started to develop, with the immigrants establishing the town of Novo Hamburgo (New Hamburg). From São Leopoldo and Novo Hamburgo, the German immigrants spread into other areas of Rio Grande do Sul, mainly close to sources of rivers. The whole region of Vale dos Sinos was populated by Germans. During the 1830s and part of the 1840s German immigration to Brazil was interrupted due to conflicts in the country (Ragamuffin War). ::Immigration restarted after 1845 with the creation of new colonies. The most important ones were Blumenau in 1850 and Joinville in 1851, both in Santa Catarina state; these attracted thousands of German immigrants to the region. Some of the mass influx was due to the Revolutions of 1848 in the German states. Nowadays these areas of German colonization are among the wealthiest parts of Brazil, with the lowest levels of unemployment and illiteracy found in the country, and still retain a strong influence from German culture. ::By the end of the 19th century, 122 German communities had been created in Rio Grande do Sul, and many others in Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. Germans helped to establish a middle-class population in Brazil, a country that was formerly divided between slaves and their masters. :More information can be found below: *The first German communities *DVHH *Seyferth, Giralda. In Mesoamerican times it was part of the Mayan empire. Later, the Spanish colonial enterprise brought European settlers, enslaved Africans, and both communities mixed with the indigenous Amerindian communities, particularly the Lenca people. European settlers also brought the Spanish and English languages to Honduras, as well as Christianity. In modern days, Honduras is a nation with a democratic unitary type of government. Spanish is the national language though there are still communities where indigenous languages are spoken. Most people are Roman Catholics, though various Protestant churches are growing quickly. Honduras es el segundo país más grande de América Central, con una población de casi diez millones de personas. En la época mesoamericana formó parte del imperio maya. Más tarde, la empresa colonial española trajo colonos europeos, africanos esclavizados y ambas comunidades se mezclaron con las comunidades indígenas amerindias, particularmente el pueblo Lenca. Los colonos europeos también trajeron los idiomas español e inglés a Honduras, así como el cristianismo. En la actualidad, Honduras es una nación con un tipo de gobierno democrático unitario. El español es el idioma nacional, aunque todavía hay comunidades donde se hablan lenguas indígenas. La mayoría de las personas son católicas romanas, aunque varias iglesias protestantes están creciendo rápidamente. There are a few things that are important to know about Honduras, in order to be sure that the resources you find reflect the correct person. Some of these things are standard genealogical practices, and others are specific to Honduras and are the purpose of this page. Some of the standard genealogical practices to follow include working from what you know, working backward in time, and citing all your sources. If you need more help learning good practices in genealogy, a great guide is the research resource guide on FamilySearch.org, or ask your fellow researchers here on the G2G forums. Hay algunas cosas que es importante saber sobre Honduras para asegurarse de que los recursos que encuentre reflejen a la persona correcta. Algunas de estas cosas es entender que existen prácticas genealógicas regulares y otras son específicas de Honduras y este es el propósito de esta página. The Latin American Roots Project is organized into a number of different teams, all working towards the project goals. Please see the list of the teams below, and who to contact if you have any questions: = Latin American Orphaned Profiles Team = The Orphaned Profiles Team consists of WikiTreers at all levels and is a great starting team for members coming into the Latin American Roots Project. Members work on orphaned profiles (profiles without a profile manager), doing whatever is needed on that particular profile: sourcing, researching, gathering census data, tidying up the text in the biography box and removing unnecessary GEDCOM clutter, etc. {| border="2" class="wikitable sortable" cellpadding="9" |- ! align="left" style="background:#d6e4ff;"|Orphaned Profiles Team Members |- | Karen Tobo - Coordinator |- |}
= Latin American Location Teams = The Location Teams consist of WikiTreers at all levels who are interested in working in one or more specific locations. Here you can develop regional Space pages, find resources, or just add profiles for people that lived there. {| border="2" class="wikitable sortable" cellpadding="9" width="500" |-! align="left" style="background:#d6e4ff;" |Location||Team Leader||Team Member Name(s) |- |Argentina|| ||Your name here! |- |Bolivia|| ||Your name here! |- |Brazil ||Adriana Hazelton||Mindy Silva, Morgana Patrocinio Costa |- |Chile ||||Your name here! |- |Columbia|| ||Your name here! |- |Costa Rica||||Your name here! |- |Cuba|| ||Your name here! |- |Dominican Republic||||Your name here! |- |Ecuador||||Your name here! |- |El Salvador||||Your name here! |- |Guatemala||||Your name here! |- |Honduras||||Beverly (Wilson) Diaz |- |Mexico||||Your name here! |- |Nicaragua||||Your name here! |- |Panama|| ||Your name here! |- |Paraguay||||Your name here! |- |Peru|| ||Your name here! |- |Puerto Rico||||Your name here! |- |Uruguay||||Your name here! |- |Venezuela||||Your name here! |}
= Profile Improvers Team (PIP) = The goal of the Latin American Roots Project is to raise Latin American profiles to the highest standard possible and make Latin American profiles the best that they can be. The PIP Team is on the front line of this effort. Whether it be through sourcing, profiling, connecting or "data-doctoring," profilers are making contributions to improve Latin American profiles all the time. In addition to this, the Latin American Roots Project manages a number of profiles where extra focus is given. Further still are the PPPs (Project Protected Profiles). The criteria for these is that the profiles must be at least 200 years old or notable, and must be contentious or duplicated. Please see Karen Tobo for details. A list of the team can be found below: {| border="2" class="wikitable sortable" cellpadding="9" |- ! align="left" style="background:#d6e4ff;"|Improvement ! align="left" style="background:#d6e4ff;"|Team Members |- |Arborists | |- |BioWriters |Mindy Silva |- |Connectors | |- | Data Doctors |Beverly (Wilson) Diaz |- | Sourcerers |Beverly (Wilson) Diaz, Kathy (Urbach) Nava |}
= Latin America Sub Projects Team = The Latin American Roots Project has a number of sub-projects and free-space pages and categories. A list of sub-projects and who is working on them can be found below. Contact Karen Tobo to join a team or propose a new team. {| border="2" class="wikitable sortable" cellpadding="9" |- ! align="left" style="background:#d6e4ff;"|Sub-Project ! align="left" style="background:#d6e4ff;"|Coordinator |- |Latin American Politicians | |- |Latin American Artists | |- |Latin American Writers | |}

The purpose of this page is to describe what are considered to be reliable sources for usage on profiles managed by the Latin America Project (and its sub-projects). It also lists sources that are not considered to be reliable, and therefore not recommended. == Reliable Sources == The following are generally considered to be reliable sources: *Parish Records
Includes microfilm and digital images of baptism, confirmation, marriage, and burial records, as well as church inventories and directories. Original parish records are usually archived by the archdiocese of the locality in which the event took place. Microfilms are typically accessible at local libraries and digitized online through various archival websites. Ocassionally, records can be requested in writing from the parish diocese. *Immigration & Travel Records
*Newspapers & Periodicals
*Land & Probate Records ==Reliable Sources with Conditions == The following are more appropriately used as finding aids, rather than as sources themselves: *Archival Indexes
such as those provided by FamilySearch, are reliable sources. However, it is recommended that you view the source image when available, rather than rely on the index alone. **Note: When citing paid subscription indexes, be sure to include the share link to enable others to view the paid content. See Wikitree's External Link Templates category for usage instructions. == Unreliable Sources == The following are not considered to be reliable sources. Ocassionally, they can provide research hints or point to available sources, which must then be independently verified. *User-Contributed Family Trees
While sometimes helpful, are not a reliable source. This applies, but is not limited to, trees found on Ancestry, FamilySearch, MyHeritage, ftDNA, Geni, Rootsweb, and even Wikitree. *3rd Party Websites, Blogs, & Record Compilations
*Find-A-Grave Memorials
*3rd Party Indexes
Indexes created by an organization other than the Archive *Wikipedia Articles
*Family Genealogies
*Genealogical & Historical Society Websites

Spain Project | Spanish Resources Name Field Guidelines == SPANISH NAMING CONVENTIONS== Here is a short practical guide on how Spanish names should be dealt with on Wikitree. However, for a comprehensive background briefing on Spanish naming conventions, one may look at Wikipedia: * Wikipedia and also at the Wikitree Free Space page dedicated to Naming Conventions: * Name Field Guidelines * Two last names ===PROPER FIRST NAME and MIDDLE NAME=== Most Spanish people have two names but many treat them as one composite name. Thus for them the right thing for them to do on Wikitree would be to put BOTH these names into the “Proper First Name” box. Otherwise both boxes should be used (as normal). Do not use the Middle Name field, but instead the entire first name included in the Proper First Name field (& the radio button “no middle name” selected). === LAST NAME AT BIRTH === As always, the names registered on official documents (Birth/Marriage/Death) should be used for establishing both Last Name at Birth and Current Last Names. In recent times, it is often the custom for Spanish people at birth to take two surnames (family names). The names generally are of both the paternal and maternal the male lines, of father then mother. Thus: the first is often their father’s first surname (which is his father’s), and the second is often their mother’s first surname (which is her father’s), although depending on the era, the names may be reversed or come from other sources. example: María del Carmen Flores Lyra * Proper First Name: María del Carmen * Preferred First Name: Carmen * Middle Name: * Last Name at Birth: Flores Lyra * Her father’s name was José Esteban Flores Pravia * Her mother’s name was Dolores Gabriela Lyra Andrade When supported by records or sources, BOTH surnames (family names) should be put into the “Last Name at Birth” box. Otherwise, put the father's first surname and then the mother's first surname in the "Last Name At Birth" field, without the "de" or "y." Sometimes Spanish surnames (family names) are connected by “y” (and), thus joining them and effectively making them one name. In addition, some names have more than one part, having a descriptor which takes the form “of the…”. Example: Gomez de la Torre (of the Tower). Unless there is a baptism record supporting it, the longer surname should go in the "Current Last Name" field, not the "Last Name At Birth" field. ===CURRENT LAST NAME === For practices in Spain, please go to the "Current Last Name in Spain" section. Traditionally, a married woman adds her husband’s first surname to her own surnames after the word “de” (of). For example: * Rosa Argentina Flores Lyra de Varey Practices are now changing. In Spain and Chile, women continue to use their maiden names after marriage, and there is a tendency in this direction in some other countries. Where a married woman takes her husband's name, she may in practice, using the above example, call herself one of the following: * Rosa Flores de Varey * Rosa de Varey * Rosa Argentina Varey (e.g. on her British passport) In some countries (e.g. Colombia) some women continue to use their maiden name AFTER their married name: * Rosa de Varey Flores and in others (e.g. USA or UK) they may “anglicise” their name for daily use: * Rosa Varey On Wikitree, it is suggested that, in cases where it is known or can be assumed that a woman added her husband's name to her own upon marriage, the husband’s first surname preceded by “de” be inserted in the “Current Last Name” box. This then results in the Profile heading (public view) of * Rosa (Flores Lyra) de Varey Then the children will be (e.g.) Gabriela Varey Flores or (e.g. in USA or UK) Gabriela Varey An example of a Descendant tree is: * Arbuthnot descendant tree Note that Portuguese and Brazilian names do NOT follow this convention but have their own. Guidance may be found at: * Portuguese names Current Last Name in Spain In Spain, a wife does not take her husband's name on marriage. She keeps the name she has been using before and this should be entered under her original name with no entry of the husband's name going in either last names or current last names: Rosa Flores Lyra In Spain, married women, with few exceptions, will have the same LNAB and Current Last Name, which is what should be used in WikiTree: * LNAB: Flores_Lyra * Current Last Name: Flores_Lyra * Profile heading (public View): Rosa Flores Lyra Practical examples of naming conventions in Spain for married women can be seen at the following links: Example of Spanish naming conventions 1 Example of Spanish naming conventions 2 Other Considerations about Last Names Common sense must be used, as well. A woman born in Spain who lived all her life in Spain was likely to be known by her maiden surname, whereas if she lived her adult life in the US in the 19th-20th Century, she may have dropped her maiden name and taken her husband's name instead. If however, she was born in the 17th -18th Century, she probably maintained her maiden name both in Spain and in the New World. Regarding double surnames, they can prove a problem as it is easy to assume they are following the rule of taking the father and mother's respective first last names when they are not, for instance Gómez Leandro Muso Muñoz García de Alcaráz is the son of Gonzalo Muso Muñoz and Inés García de Alcaráz. His wife is María Tomasa de Guevara Ponce de León y Alburquerque, her parents being Juan de Guevara Ponce de León and María Alburquerque Leones y Guevara. Their son appears to have only used Muso Muñoz as his last name. The problem here is that Muso, Muñoz, García, Alcarz, de Guevara, Ponce de León, Alburquerque and Leones can and often are single surnames but here are being used in combination with others to form a “single” surname (similar to the English speaking world hyphenating their surnames). Another and easier to understand example is Pedro Navarro Marín. Following the general rule, one might expect his father to be Pedro Navarro and his mother Juana Marín but in fact his father is Pedro Navarro Marín (a double first surname) and Mother Juana Pérez. (* see list below) Note that if only one surname is used (for either men or women), it is usually the first surname (in the example above, Flores), although there are exceptions, such as for disambiguation. Wikipedia mentions that when the first surname is very common (e.g. Federico García Lorca), it is not unusual to use only the second surname, as in “Lorca”, when referring to him, but that does not affect alphabetization: discussions of "Lorca", the Spanish poet, must be alphabetized in an index under “García Lorca", never "Lorca", i.e., Lorca's LNAB in WikiTree should be Garcia_Lorca-XX. When a surname is formed with prepositions, articles or conjunctions (de, la, y/e), special rules apply. If a surname begins with a preposition or a preposition and an article, these are not capitalized if they are used with the first name, examples, “María de la Torre”, “Miguel de la Rosa”. However, if the preposition stands alone without the first name, it is capitalized, such as "señora De la Torre", señor "De la Rosa". Conjunctions between last names are always written in lower case, as in "Ortega y Gasset", "Ramón y Cajal", " Joan Miró i Ferrà". Surnames that are formed with a vowel are capitalized, but the preposition and article are not, giving us "Julia de la O Murillo", "Mariana Madrigal de la O". List of Double Names Below is a list of some Spanish double or complex names you may come across. These are not names following the usual pattern of father's first and mother's first surname but are effectively “single” surnames that are passed down the generations. The problems they create are to first confuse the unwary as to the identity of the parents. They also are often miswritten in documents by having bits missed and can be easily overlooked. The scribes of early baptisms and other church records were not that scrupulous in what they recorded. An instance is that of two brothers whose last name should have been García Menchirón, whose marriages are recorded by different scribes on the same page. One gave the full name whilst the other only gave Garcia. * Alburquerque Leones * de Guevara Ponce de León * de Vera Miñarro * Estéban de Alarcón * Fernández Menchirón * Fernández de Plazas * García de Alcaráz * García de Guevara * García Menchirón * García Miñarro * Ladrón de Guevara * Leones Alburquerque * Leones de Guevara * López Teruel * Marsilla de Teruel or Marcilla de Teruel * Martínez Carrasco * Mateos de Aguilar * Mateos Montalbán * Mateos Rendón * Moya Angeler * Muso (or Musso) Muñoz * Navarro de Guevara * Navarro Leones * Navarro Marín * Navarro Rodenas * Pérez de Meca * Pérez Monte * Ponce de León * Primo de Rivera * Queipo de Llano * Soler Blázquez * Soler Castejón * Rubio Torreglosa Additional names can be found at the following link: * Double Last Names/Apellidos Compuestos
