*'''Viewer Comments''' #Sue Bell - I just watched ABC Open featuring Alan's 100th Birthday. What an Amazing Australian! I had to find out more about this man! Must contact ABC Australian Story so we can learn more about Alan. #Kerri Smith - What a wonderful artist. I'm regularly surprised at the obscurity of such talented creative people. #Petah Digby - Thank you Uncle Alan - you did an amazing thing recording the exposure of those atrocities! What a horrifying experience it must have been. Good to see you still with us. Your Goddaughter Petah. #goodnewseverybodycom - Wow, great work! I never heard of this artist or this type of artwork. I found this by accident while searching the history of WWII POW camps after hearing the amazing story of Louis Zamberini in the audio book Unbroken . I shared this video on my facebook group (Good News Creativity) 1

According to a Headstone found in Watson Family Cemetery, Titusville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, USA. A George McCray passed away on May 11, 1863 having lived 54 years, 11 months, and 11 day. This would put the birth of George McCray around March 31, 1808. This would be in line with George McCray Jr.'s Date of Birth. Currently George Jr's Death Date is placed between 1870-1880 while George Sr's Death is May 11, 1863. More research is needed to varify Death Dates of Both George McCrays. Located next to Headstone of George McCray is a Headstone for Sarah A. McCray Date of Death February 6, 1887 with age 74years 7months. If this is any indication these might be husband and wife.  Alan Moore, one of only two remaining Second World War official war artists, visited the Memorial on 25 February 2014 to see an exhibition of his works before it was taken off display on 26 February. It was the first time that the 99 year old artist had seen his works of art since presenting them to the Memorial's National Collection over 60 years ago.

Following the outbreak of the Second World War, Alan Moore's aspirations to be an official war artist were not realised immediately. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1942 and was assigned the task of drawing diagrams of Allied planes. In February 1943 the Australian War Memorial Art Committee considered Moore's official war artist application, and were impressed by recommendations from artists William Dargie and Harold Herbert. Moore was appointed in November 1943 and attached to the army, with the rank of lieutenant. His commission was to depict the activities of the RAAF working in New Guinea, the Middle East and Europe.

The works on display included depictions of his eye-witness accounts of the atrocities and horrors at the Bergen Belsen concentration camp in Germany. Alan Moore was the only Australian official war artist working in Germany to directly capture horrific scenes of the Holocaust.

Mr Moore was welcomed by the Memorial's director, Dr Brendan Nelson.

Alan talks about the blind man walking among the dead waving a stick in front of him hitting the bodies, he wanted to make it because it might possibly stop the awfulness of the death of war

Director / Editor: Emily Bissland Camera: Larissa Romensky Camera: Emily Bissland • By Emily Bissland · 6 mins · From Unsung

He was born just three days before the outbreak of WWI. He bore witness to the Holocaust. He has pure artistic talent and has shared friendships with artistic greats such as Fred Williams and Albert Tucker.
He has enjoyed three happy marriages, studied and taught at some of Victoria's premier art schools and was part of the Expressionist art movement.
This year in August, Alan Moore celebrated his 100th birthday amongst friends and family at a nursing home in Avoca. I was lucky enough to be there to film the auspicious event.
When sitting down to speak with him, I am reminded that I am speaking with someone from another era. I am conscious that culture, technology, ideology, notions of femininity and masculinity have so drastically shifted that the gulf created between us may be too wide to cross.
This will be the most difficult, important and emotional interview of my career to date.
When I ask Alan if this birthday felt any more significant than any other, he becomes thoughtful.
“No… excepting that this one is, ah, I suppose more important, to me…
Why? I ask.
“Well, the fact that I don’t think I’ll see another one.”
There’s an uncomfortable moment of pause where we both consider the finality of what comes when the birthdays stop. His sparkling blue eyes smile at me then and he chuckles. I smile back, hoping he is wrong.
But to be honest, being in his frail company, hearing each laboured breath through my headphones linked to his microphone, it makes me feel as though when you reach 100, the line between life and death is very thinly drawn.
Who better to understand mortality than Alan, a witness to the aftermath of the Holocaust and a husband robbed of both his first and second wives to illness?
Who better to interpret love, grief and war than an artist who seems to paint with light itself?
It exhausts Alan to talk, so it is Penelope Hunt, an artist herself and the daughter of his wife Alison, who fills in the details of his life for me.
As a 16 year old, Alan went to his first life drawing class but was banned when his father discovered the nude pictures he had drawn. As soon as he turned 18, Alan was back at it and enrolled at the VCA (then called the National Gallery Art School) where he completed his painting degree, going on to win various art and drawing prizes in Melbourne.
Then, as a young man, Moore married his first wife, Maria. But, with the outbreak of WWII a month later, he was torn between his duty to his wife and his country. He decided to write to express his interest in becoming a war artist, had no reply for months and, after receiving one too many white feathers from womenfolk, eventually felt compelled to join up in whatever way he could.
It’s a long story, I was in Aircrew first, but there was difficulty – I had trouble with one leg, they wouldn’t take anyone who had anything wrong, so I said, well if you’re not going to take me that way, take me as an ordinary trooper! And they said 'oh no we want you… as a war artist'. And I said yes.
Moore’s stepdaughter, Penelope, has spent hours at the Australian War Memorial reading communications from Alan that were written during the war. She believes it was actually a bit more difficult for Alan to win his place as war artist. He had to write, pledging his case numerous times, send examples of work from his years at the National Gallery Art School, list the prizes he had won and provide letters of recommendations from esteemed artists, including a veteran war artist.
It wasn't until late in 1943 that Moore finally received word. Alan Moore would be deployed as an Official War Artist.
Being a war artist, Alan was positioned with numerous Allied troops which afforded him adventures to many of the hostile fronts. He began with the RAAF in New Guinea, went to the Middle East, Italy, France and towards the end of the war, was in London preparing to paint returned allied Prisoners of War.
Instead, Alan requested to join the troops who were heading to Germany, believing that he would be of more use there. Eventually, he joined with the British 11th Armoured Division that was heading to Germany.
During 1944, Soviet troops overran various concentration camps in Poland and newsreels shocked the world with vision of the deserted camps. Most of the prisoners had been killed or ‘death-marched’ to other camps with buildings and bodies destroyed. Even while much evidence of murder and torture remained, including gas chambers and huge piles of the clothes and shoes of victims, the world was yet to fully understand the extent of Nazi atrocities.
By April 1945, it was clear Germany was losing the war, this and a plague of typhus threatening SS soldiers in a Concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen led to a unique and locally-arranged German surrender where the British 11th Armoured Division would locate, liberate and take over control. When they did, Lieutenant Alan Moore was there with his sketchbook and camera.
Nothing could have prepared him for what they were about to see.
In this instance, the Nazis had made no attempt to destroy the evidence of the 20,000 corpses, nor relocate the 50,000 starved and diseased survivors. The troops discovered piles of skeletons, both living and dead, and were sometimes unable to discern between them.
The level of deprivation, illness and starvation was unfathomable and they had to call for reinforcement to bury the dead and feed and medicate survivors. They worked in a stench of rotting flesh and human faeces. Thousands of the survivors were so starved and sick they did not live through the next week.
These are the scenes Alan Moore began to sketch. He knew that if he didn't work quickly, all evidence of this atrocity would soon be burnt and buried.
Over the next few days, the British gained control of the camp and tried to bury the thousands of dead before disease began to spread. They organised the SS troops to begin to carry the corpses into mass graves, without protection from typhus, as punishment for their crimes.
Alan sketched the piles of bodies. He sketched a British soldier, running with pointed bayonet at an SS Soldier seen dragging a corpse disrespectfully. At the mass burial service, Alan sketched, and was photographed doing so.
It wasn’t until a British soldier warned him that no-one would believe what was contained in his drawings, that he picked up his camera and began to document the scenes with photography.
Those photographs now sit in a pile in Alan’s home in the Victorian town of Avoca. I documented them for this film and, when I was holding these black-and-white photographs he had taken, printed and labelled with his own hand, I trembled.
Never have I felt so close to the holocaust.
The horror of war.
In this moment, I began to question the ethics of my interview with Alan. Was it fair to remind this wonderful man of the one thing he has spent his life trying to forget? And on the eve of such a happy day, his one-hundredth birthday? Had I really understood what I was asking him to do?
That night I found it very difficult to sleep, and I still don’t have the answer. I can only take comfort in Alan's words that he wanted to show the true awfulness of war .
After his years at war, Alan returned to Melbourne, was reunited with Maria, but really had no way to process what he had seen. He found it difficult to settle into the Melbourne arts scene that was angry about the war and protesting through their work.
Upon his return, Alan painted many images of the war from the sketches and photographs that he took, which were given to the Australian War Memorial National collection over 60 years ago. Many of them he never saw again, until visiting his own Retrospective exhibition in Canberra earlier this year.
For a long while after the war, Alan did not speak about what he had seen, or show people the photographs he took. He was well into his 70s when he first disclosed this experience to the son of his second wife, Paul White, who was living with them at the time in their house on Collins Street in Melbourne.
One day, he asked Paul to accompany him down to his studio.
Paul White tells how Alan removed a small pile of photographs and sketches from a case, rested them on his lap and then silently began to pass them across. Alan didn’t say much, he allowed the photographs to tell the story.
These were the same photographs I held and have used in this film. Paul remembers that later, when he told his mother about what had happened, she said that this was most likely the first time Alan had opened up about what he saw.
He was later was interviewed by the ABC’s Scott Bevan for his book Battle Lines: Australian War Artists and he was in his 80s when he first disclosed stories of his time at Bergen-Belsen to his step-daughter, Penelope Hunt.
He doesn’t talk about it any more. As you can imagine, and as I witnessed, it brings him great pain and anxiety to do so.
Alan was painting until the age of 95 and only stopped when arthritis took the movement out of his hands and his vision began to fail.
His studio in Avoca still sits exactly as he left it, with tubes of paint half-used, brushes and easels at the ready, frames waiting to be filled and half-finished paintings resting against all of the four walls.
It was a great honour to have been asked by Alan’s family to make this film and to have had the opportunity to sit and talk with such a man.

In the 1820s, women were expected to marry and have children, if they did not do that, they were seen by the society like if they were different, but in a bad way. ... The idea was that upper-middle-class women had to stay dependent of a man first as a daughter and then as a wife 1

The late James McGivern HUMPHREY was the friend of everyone. He married Miss FOWLER d/o John FOWLER of Lakeville who survives him and has six sons and one daughter. Mr. Humphrey went to Montreal about the first of the month. At that time he complained of a slight cold, but nothing of a serious nature was ever thought of.. Shortly after he arrived in Montreal his cold got worse and pneumonia developed. He placed himself under the care of skilful phtysicians but in vain. Death relieved his sufferings Monday afternoon. His son, Frank HUMPHREY and his brother, Wyndham HUMPHREY arrived here with the remains by the C.P.R. Tuesday afternoon, The remains were enclosed in a rose wood casket with trimmings of oxidized silver. The plate bears the following inscription: James McGivern Humphrey / Died April 16th, 1894 / Aged 49 years. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon 3 o'clock. The service was conducted by Rev. W.O. Raymond. The pall bearers were Dr. G. CRAWFORD, Dr. P. WARNEFORD, D.J. McCORMACK, John V. RUSSEL, B.J. HAMMOND, W.J. FLEWELLING. 1

There are also lists of people who are connected to others listed in the probate records in Charleston. Henry Templeton of Boonesborough appears in a probate record as having a debt to the estate of William Young. This note of him being mentioned in estate papers has lead researchers to think he died in Charleston on the date the debt was made not when or where he actually died. This may be the same situation. This is the information for for further research: South Carolina, Charleston District, Estate inventories, 1732-1844, database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:W1WC-VZ6Z : 12 March 2020), Henry Templeton, 14 Nov 1765 citing Court, Charleston, South Carolina, United States, S146001, p. 67 (57 on FS microfilm) South Carolina Department of Archives and History, Columbia. 1

Through the first half of the 19th century two of the largest landowners along the upper waters of Hard Labor Creek were the brothers George and Samuel Marshall. Their homes were some six miles west of Greenwood in the section that became known as Promised Land. They were sons of Samuel and Mary Steen (or Stene) Marshall who came with eight children to Charleston from County Tyrone, Ireland in 1791 or 1792 (the date varies in family accounts). The family who landed in Charleston settled first along Indian Creek in the northern part of Newberry County. Samuel and Mary Steen Marshall had two more children, a total of 10. 1
